As an AI R&D Software Engineer, you will design and develop advanced AI-driven solutions for Honeywell’s automation systems, contributing to next-generation product innovation. You’ll apply your expertise in AI, software engineering, and process control, working on high-impact R&D projects within a global engineering team.

This role offers the opportunity to act as an AI subject matter expert, collaborate with industry leaders, and drive innovations that enable smarter, safer, and more efficient industrial operations.



Key Responsibilities:


  • Conduct research and development of AI algorithms and models to address industrial automation challenges.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI solutions into existing automation systems and processes.
  • Be an AI evangelist within the R&D team to build capabilities in emerging AI technologies.
  • Work closely with the systems architecture, user experience design, and other functional teams to conceive and develop new innovations.
  • Prototype and validate AI technologies to ensure robustness, scalability, and performance in industrial environments.
  • Stay current with emerging AI trends and technologies to continuously enhance Honeywell’s AI capabilities.
  • Play a hands-on role in delivery of new product introductions, working closely with the R&D team and customers. Tasks include a range of activities across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Document research findings and contribute to intellectual property generation including patents and publications.
  • Actively participate in technical strategic planning
  • Provide responsive customer support for software solutions developed


 

Key Experience & Capabilities:


Essential

  • At least 2 years of experience in AI research and development in industrial automation or related fields. Knowledge of and experience applying various artificial intelligence technologies in real world applications, understanding the opportunities & challenges of applying AI in industrial automation.
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, and AI frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and experience with data processing and model deployment.
  • Software engineering: Solid foundation in software development principles and lifecycle management.

Highly Valued


  • Artificial intelligence: Expertise in designing and implementing AI models and systems.
  • Machine learning: Proficiency in developing algorithms that enable systems to learn from data.
  • APIs: Ability to design and integrate APIs for AI services and tools.
  • Automation: Skills in automating AI workflows and processes for efficiency.
  • Industry experience in sectors such as oil and gas, power, renewables, chemicals, pharma, or mining metals and minerals
  • Experience in process control and advanced process control (APC), real-time optimization, performance monitoring, first principles modelling & distributed control systems
  • Experience in a global R&D environment for new product development
  • Experience as researcher / investigator in a university setting or has worked closely with universities
  • Automation experience in other domains such as aviation, robotics or autonomous vehicles 
  • Experience working in agile development environments and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to innovate in complex technical environments.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems, automation protocols, or manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with programming languages: C/C++, JSON, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, SQL
  • Experience with AI-assisted software development
  • Experience creating performant and scalable software designs
  • Understanding of software-based security concepts
  • Understanding of system architecture principles, design patterns, and best practices, particularly for high performance mission critical Industrial Control System, DCS or SCADA systems
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, and their deployment.


Education / Qualifications       


Essential

  • Tertiary degree qualification in engineering or mathematics

Highly Valued

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Control System Engineering or related fields.
