The Opportunity
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer we are seeking a Financial Controller to join our team, leading FP&A, Financial Accounting & Transaction services, Payroll and driving the broader Finance strategic initiatives. We're looking for a "can-do" self-starter, who has a passion for developing their team and implementing a positive workplace culture. The ideal candidate will be a finance professional who enjoys collaborating with diverse stakeholders, enjoys finding opportunities for continuous improvement and can drive outcomes.
The Financial Controller is a senior finance leader responsible for directing financial reporting, accounting operations, payroll, internal controls, and compliance activities for the business. This role provides strategic oversight of financial integrity, supports executive decision-making, and ensures the organisation's financial practices are aligned with corporate policy, regulatory requirements, and business objectives.
The Financial Controller leads a team of finance and accounting professionals and partners with senior leadership to drive operational performance, risk management, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership and Governance
  • Lead the organisation's financial control environment, including accounting governance, policy compliance, and internal control effectiveness.
  • Serve as a key finance advisor to senior leadership on financial performance, risks, and opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain financial controls consistent with corporate and regulatory requirements.
  • Actively contribute to Financial Leadership Initiatives and be a proactive member of the Finance Leadership Team
  • Collaboratively working with Business Managers and the broader finance function to meet business and program needs

Financial Reporting, Analysis and Transactional Services
  • Leadership across FP&A, Payroll, Financial Accounting and Transactional Services groups
  • Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial reporting (statutory, local and consolidated US reporting).
  • Review and approve financial statements, reports, and management information.
  • Provide clear analysis of financial results, trends, variances, and forecasts.
  • Management of overhead cost pools, rate management and reporting
  • Oversee Long Range Business Planning reporting cycles
  • Support executive reporting, including board-level and leadership presentations as required.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards.

Internal Controls, Compliance, and Audit
  • Maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting and operational accounting processes.
  • Lead support for internal and external audits, regulatory reviews, and control assessments.
  • Identify control weaknesses and drive corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with tax, statutory, corporate, and legal reporting requirements.

Business Partnering and Strategic Support
  • Partner with operational and functional leaders to support budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning.
  • Contribute to business decisions through financial insight, risk assessment, and scenario analysis.
  • Support strategic initiatives, investment reviews, and performance improvement efforts.
  • Influence decision-making through effective communication of financial impacts.

Team Leadership and Development
  • Lead, coach, and develop finance and accounting staff.
  • Build a high-performing team culture focused on accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote succession planning, capability development, and employee engagement.
  • Assign priorities and manage workload to meet business and reporting deadlines.

Process Improvement and Systems
  • Drive improvements in accounting processes, reporting efficiency, and control effectiveness.
  • Partner with business and IT teams to optimize financial systems, tools, and data quality.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and standardization.
  • Ensure financial processes scale effectively with business needs.

Experience/Qualifications
  • Relevant Business/Accounting/Finance degree
  • Post graduate Professional membership with CPA / CAANZ or equivalent
  • Proven leadership skills and management techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with key stakeholders
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to deliver on-time with high quality
  • Financial policy and process definition
  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens and the ability to obtain a Defence security clearance would be required
