Runs character FX and simulations for cloth, hair, rigid bodies, crowds, muscles, and other assets using Maya and nCloth. Troubleshoots simulations, adds secondary motion, cleans and models shots, develops solutions for rigging challenges, and incorporates supervisor and client feedback. Collaborates with VFX supervisors, leads, animators, and other departments to deliver high-quality shots on schedule. The role requires relocation to Sydney and begins in January 2027.
Flying Bark Productions is a dynamic and innovative animation studio dedicated to pushing the boundaries of character animation and storytelling. We are working on exciting projects such as Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Netflix's Ghostbusters animated series and Stranger Things animated series, as well as our production Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.
This is an Expression of Interest for roles starting in January 2027. Candidates must be open to relocate to Sydney, no remote opportunities.
We are looking for an experienced CFX Artist to join our team! Reporting to our Producer, your role will include running character FX and simulations, trouble shooting and adding secondary motion to 3D animation where needed and work closely with VFX Supervisors and Leads to deliver final shots.
About the role:
- Run character related FX and simulations including but not limited to cloth, hair, rigid body, crowd, or muscles, in particular using nCloth in Maya to do cloth simulation
- Work closely with VFX Supervisors and Leads to determine the best approach to solve effects challenges and develop final look in shot development
- Running simulations for shot production; troubleshooting and providing revisions based on Supervisor/Client feedback
- Shot modelling and/or cleaning existing character related simulations
- Adding secondary motion to 3D animation where needed
- Adding further simulation on other assets such as geometry hair clumps, hero feathers etc. if required
- Support pipeline animation principles, timing and departmental interdependencies
- Maintain a consistent level of productivity while meeting deadlines and producing high quality work.
- And all other duties and responsibilities as reasonably required by the Production Company.
About you:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Up to date and in-depth knowledge of Maya and nCloth
- Experience programming/scripting with Python, MEL and/or C++
- Experience with Houdini preferred
- Ability to develop techniques and processes to solve rigging production challenges.
