Halter is the global leader in virtual fencing and herding, trusted by farmers across New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. Halter’s smart collars, software, and mobile app allow farmers to contain, monitor, and move their herds without physical fences - improving productivity, animal welfare, and environmental outcomes. As Halter rapidly scales internationally, communications plays a critical role in building trust, educating stakeholders, and protecting the company’s social license to operate.

The Communications Manager, Australia will establish and lead Halter’s communications function in the Australian market at a pivotal stage of growth. New markets in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia are opening up, providing enormous opportunities but also challenges as the company expands rapidly.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, this role will be responsible for building Halter’s profile with Australian media, proactively telling Halter’s story to farmers and the broader public, and managing reputational risk - particularly in relation to animal welfare and emerging technology scrutiny.

This is a critical, hands-on role suited to an experienced communications professional who understands Australia’s media, political, and social landscape and is comfortable operating in a fast-growing, high-scrutiny environment. The role will work closely with Halter’s Australian marketing team, an external PR agency, and senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an Australia-focused communications strategy aligned with Halter’s global narrative and growth plans.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Australian journalists across rural, mainstream, business, and technology media.
  • Act as the primary media contact for Halter Australia.
  • Manage and direct Halter’s Australian PR and communications agency, ensuring clear priorities, strong outputs, and measurable ROI.
  • Lead proactive media outreach tied to market expansion, customer stories, product innovation, events, and major announcements.
  • Produce high-quality content including press releases, media statements, opinion pieces, FAQs, and talking points for Halter spokespeople.
  • Localise global messaging for the Australian context, ensuring relevance to Australian farmers, regulators, and public audiences.
  • Support thought leadership opportunities for senior Halter leaders in Australia.
  • Work closely with Marketing to align earned media, campaigns, and lead-generation efforts.
  • Identify and proactively manage reputational risks in the Australian market, particularly around animal welfare, technology adoption, and operational incidents.
  • Develop and maintain crisis communications plans, holding statements, and escalation protocols.
  • Provide rapid-response communications support during incidents, investigations, or heightened media scrutiny.
  • Advise senior leadership on issues management and risk mitigation.
  • Support Halter’s Australian leadership team with communications advice, media preparation, and profile-building opportunities.
  • Work closely with Strategic Relations and external partners where communications intersects with regulatory or political considerations.
  • Ensure Australian communications are aligned with Halter’s global strategy, values, and tone of voice.
  • Establish scalable communications systems, processes, and workflows for Australia.
  • As Halter grows, contribute to planning future resourcing and capability needs in-market.
  • Act as a trusted senior communications advisor within the Australian business.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 8 years+ experience in communications, public relations, corporate affairs, or journalism.
  • Strong understanding of the Australian media landscape, with established journalist relationships.
  • Proven experience delivering proactive PR and managing reputational risk or crisis situations.
  • Experience managing PR or communications agencies.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience in agriculture, technology, infrastructure, energy, or other highly scrutinised sectors is highly desirable.

Attributes

  • Strategic thinker with strong commercial awareness.
  • Calm, credible, and decisive under pressure.
  • Hands-on self-starter who thrives in fast-paced, rapidly-scaling environments.
  • Strong relationship-builder with excellent judgment and integrity.
  • Team player who plays for the front of the jersey.
