The opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Databricks Platform SME to become the global owner for our Databricks environment, providing strategic and technical leadership for one of the most critical data platforms in our business. This role sits outside the delivery function — instead, you will guide, influence and uplift delivery teams by defining standards, shaping our operating model, and ensuring we get the very best out of a platform that underpins our AI and data ecosystem today.

About QBE

  • At QBE, we get to the heart of what matters for our customers. And we do it all with a human touch.

  • We’re an international insurer with more than 13,000 people working across 26 countries – which means we’re big enough for your ambitions, yet small enough for you to make a real impact. It’s an exciting time. We’re building momentum towards our vision to become the most consistent and innovative risk partner.

  • What if you could have a positive impact – at work and in the world? As part of the QBE team, you’ll get to spend every day working with people who are passionate, talented and kind.

Your new role

As the Databricks Platform SME, you will help define the future of our global operating model, establish governance frameworks, and provide expert-level direction on configuration, optimisation and usage. You’ll bring hands‑on platform experience, deep technical understanding, and the ability to translate business needs into platform design and best practice.

This is a rare opportunity to step into a high-impact, high-visibility role shaping how Databricks is used across a global organisation.

  • Act as the global owner for the Databricks platform, defining the operating model, governance structures, standards, coding guidelines and best practices.

  • Configure, enable and oversee Databricks features, ensuring secure, efficient and scalable platform usage across teams.

  • Provide expert guidance to delivery teams on architecture, Spark optimisation, Delta best practices, workflow design and complex troubleshooting.

  • Establish and enforce security guardrails including RBAC, workspace access, cluster policies, vulnerability scanning and networking controls.

  • Drive platform monitoring, workload optimisation and cost management across clusters and SQL Warehouses.

  • Collaborate with Cloud, Security, DevOps, Infrastructure and Application Delivery teams to ensure aligned platform usage, compliance and operational excellence.

About you

You are confident guiding engineering and delivery teams, influencing standards, and shaping platform governance without being embedded in day‑to‑day delivery.

You thrive in environments where you can solve complex technical challenges, design frameworks that scale globally, and uplift overall capability. You’re comfortable owning a platform end‑to‑end and enjoy being the go‑to expert for Databricks in a large, enterprise environment.

You will also:

  • Extensive hands-on experience managing and enabling the Databricks platform in an enterprise setting.

  • Strong understanding of data engineering principles, Spark optimisation, Delta Lake, workflow orchestration and platform configuration.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex platform and workload issues, including performance tuning and architectural decisions.

  • Knowledge of data modelling, data management, ETL/ELT patterns and real-time/batch pipeline design.

  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to influence across Cloud, Security, DevOps and engineering teams.

Benefits

We offer a range of benefits to help provide holistic support for your work life, whatever your circumstances. As a QBE employee you will have access to and benefit from:

  • ‘Hybrid Working’ – a mix of working from home and in the office to enhance your work/life balance

  • Free holistic wellbeing coaching, nutritional, confidential counselling, financial and legal advice

  • 18 weeks’ gender-equal flexible leave for all new parents, including paid super
