Where and how we work:

We are open to candidates based in Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane with full Australian work rights. We operate in a hybrid model, giving you flexibility to work from home, a shared workspace, or a combination of both.

This role includes participation in a rotating on-call schedule. Candidates must have prior experience supporting production systems while on call. We actively invest in improving monitoring, automation, and operational processes to reduce alert fatigue and continuously improve the on-call experience.

Job Description

About the role:

As a DevOps Engineer at Ignition, you will help operate, improve, and automate our cloud infrastructure under the guidance of senior engineers. You’ll work closely with backend engineers and the DevOps team to keep our systems reliable, secure, and easy to deploy.

This role is hands-on and execution focused. You won’t be expected to design everything from scratch, but you will be expected to understand how things work, follow best practices, and steadily take on more responsibility as you grow.

What your day to day will look like:

  • Operate and support our Kubernetes-based infrastructure, ensuring services are deployed, healthy, and scalable.
  • Use Terraform to provision and manage AWS infrastructure including EC2, RDS, S3, and Route 53.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call roster, responding to infrastructure and application incidents.
  • Triage alerts, investigate issues, mitigate impact, and escalate appropriately.
  • Support the operation of Redis and Postgres, identifying issues and working with senior engineers on performance and reliability improvements.
  • Monitor system health and uptime, proactively addressing issues before they impact users.
  • Contribute to improving monitoring, alerting, and runbooks based on real on-call experience.
  • Take part in incident reviews and postmortems, helping reduce repeat incidents and on-call noise.
  • Support and improve CI/CD pipelines using Buildkite to ensure fast and reliable deployments.
  • Apply security best practices and follow established processes to maintain a secure production environment.
  • Collaborate closely with backend engineers to support application and infrastructure needs.
  • Document operational procedures, infrastructure changes, and troubleshooting guides.

How we do it:

We build and operate a modular monolith Ruby on Rails application with a GraphQL API and a React/Apollo frontend. Our infrastructure runs on AWS and is managed using Kubernetes and Terraform.

We deploy to production frequently, often multiple times per day, using Buildkite. Reliability is a core focus, and we actively invest in automation, observability, and process improvements to maintain high uptime while keeping on-call sustainable.

Qualifications

What you need to succeed:

  • 2–4 years of experience in a DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure-focused role.
  • Previous experience participating in an on-call rotation for production systems (mandatory).
  • Hands-on experience responding to incidents, investigating alerts, and supporting live environments.
  • Working knowledge of AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, Route 53).
  • Practical experience with Kubernetes (deployments, debugging, scaling basics).
  • Experience using Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, preferably Buildkite or similar systems.
  • Operational understanding of Redis and Postgres.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as CloudWatch, Datadog, or OpenTelemetry.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm and effective during incidents.
  • Clear communication skills and comfort working closely with engineers.

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience supporting Ruby on Rails applications in production.
  • Exposure to caching layers or CDNs.
  • Experience working in environments with defined uptime or SLA targets.
  • Interest in reliability engineering, automation, or security.
