Job Description

The Sydney Morning Herald is seeking highly motivated digital news producers and sharp-eyed sub-editors to help drive our digital-first newsroom. Working at the heart of the Herald’s fast-paced publishing desk, you will provide the final polish and presentation for Australia's market-leading journalism. Whether you are cutting through the noise as news breaks or crafting the presentation of a long-form feature, your mission is to present our stories to audiences in the most compelling way possible.

These roles (two full-time and one permanent part-time) span a dynamic roster across mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Day-to-day your role will include:

  • Quality control: Rigorously review and edit stories in our CMS, applying an intense focus on factual accuracy, grammar, syntax, and tight deadlines.

  • Audience engagement: Craft highly engaging, SEO-optimised headlines, write-offs, and captions that command attention and drive readership.

  • Digital enhancement: Elevate storytelling by expertly sourcing and integrating high-impact photographs, video, interactive graphics and multimedia assets.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with reporters, topic editors, content directors and your fellow producers.

  • Live coverage: Produce and edit live blogs, ensuring real-time copy is dynamic, engaging, and error-free.

  • Data-driven strategy: Leverage digital publishing analytics to understand audience behavior and continuously optimise story presentation.

What you’ll bring:

  • Proven experience in sub-editing and digital production for online publishing, and an eagerness to master new skills in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

  • Exceptional command of the English language, grammar and syntax.

  • Flawless news judgment and an acute awareness of The Sydney Morning Herald brand and audience expectations.

  • Ability to work with speed and precision under the pressure of rolling deadlines.

  • A broad intellectual curiosity, ready to tackle topics spanning breaking news, sport, business, lifestyle and features.

  • Solid understanding of media law, specifically defamation and legal best practices.

  • An adaptable mindset with an eagerness to master new skills in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated experience curating and editing the homepage for a major, high-traffic news masthead.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to make rapid, informed editorial decisions based on real-time traffic data.

  • Proven leadership capabilities in a breaking news environment, with experience directing reporters and managing desk priorities under pressure.
