About the Role

As a Director within the Quality Management – Independence, Ethics and Conflicts team, you will provide strategic leadership and technical oversight in promoting compliance with auditor independence requirements, conflict of interest obligations, and professional ethical standards. You will be a trusted adviser to senior leadership and a key driver of policy development, regulatory alignment, and cultural reinforcement of ethical conduct across the firm.

This role requires deep subject matter expertise, sound professional judgment, and the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the business. You will lead high-impact projects, oversee complex independence and conflict consultations, and represent the firm in national and global forums relating to ethics and independence.

You’ll be recognised and valued within a supportive team and have the flexibility to work from home and in the office. You can be based in any major Australian city.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Leadership and Advisory
    Provide strategic guidance to partners and leadership teams on the interpretation and application of auditor independence, conflict of interest, and ethics regulations, including APES 110, Corporations Act, and SEC/PCAOB requirements. Influence firmwide decision-making on high-risk and complex matters.

  • Regulatory and Policy Alignment
    Lead the review and implementation of changes arising from emerging legislation, professional standards, and global policy developments. Engage with standard setters, regulators, and BDO Global policy forums to ensure the firm’s frameworks remain current, compliant, and fit for purpose.

  • Policy Development and Governance
    Direct the design, enhancement, and governance of national independence, conflict and ethics policies and supporting tools. Ensure policies are risk-aligned, pragmatic and operationally effective across diverse business units and service lines.

  • Program Oversight and Project Delivery
    Oversee and drive independence and ethics transformation initiatives, including current/future state mapping, change impact analysis, and stakeholder engagement. Ensure alignment between regulatory obligations, quality objectives and operational implementation.

  • Stakeholder Engagement and Change Enablement
    Build strong relationships across functional leadership groups, including Legal, Enterprise Risk, People & Culture and Service Line Leadership. Champion change through effective communication, executive briefings, and structured stakeholder consultation.

  • Capability Building and Culture
    Oversee the development and delivery of technical training and communications to embed ethical decision-making and independence risk awareness across the firm. Shape learning content to reflect real-world risk scenarios and reinforce a strong compliance culture.
