Where and how you can work

This role is remote across Australia and New Zealand. Our flagship campus is in Sydney, with additional campuses in Melbourne and co-working spaces across ANZ — but you have choice in where and how you work. We trust our Canvanauts to find the balance that empowers them and their team to do their best work.

Job Description

What you's be doing in this role

Canva is investing in intelligent, multimedia creation — embedding AI and ML directly into our products to unlock faster, more private, and more delightful creation experiences for hundreds of millions of users.

We’re forming a new Edge AI team within Video Studio, focused on bringing real-time, on-device ML to Canva. Think background removal, AI-driven audio levelling, and intelligent video effects running natively across iOS, Android, and web — without server round-trips.

As the Engineering Manager for Edge A, you’ll lead and support a team building these capabilities from the ground up. You’ll create clarity, build healthy engineering practices, and grow the people around you — ensuring the team consistently delivers high-quality outcomes aligned to strategy.

This is an opportunity to shape a new team, define sustainable ways of working, and help bring production-ready on-device ML to Canva’s global community.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Leading and developing a team building cross-platform, on-device ML infrastructure and features in C++ across iOS, Android, and web.

  • Setting team direction and translating complex, evolving problem spaces into clear priorities and milestones.

  • Creating an environment where thoughtful planning, strong execution, and continuous improvement are the norm.

  • Partnering closely with Platform, Research, Product, and ML stakeholders to deliver meaningful user impact.

  • Strengthening engineering foundations across architecture, performance, testing, CI, and maintainability.

  • Supporting responsible production ML practices including experimentation, iteration, and performance monitoring.

  • Building an inclusive, psychologically safe culture where people feel supported, trusted, and able to do their best work.

You’re probably a match if

  • You’ve led engineering teams delivering complex technical products, ideally in systems-level, native, or cross-platform environments.

  • You’re comfortable engaging in systems programming discussions (C/C++, native APIs, performance trade-offs), even if you’re not coding day-to-day.

  • You have experience with, or strong interest in, ML-powered product capabilities such as on-device ML or inference runtimes (deep ML expertise is welcome but not required).

  • You bring strong technical judgment and help teams navigate architectural decisions and trade-offs with care and clarity.

  • You create focus in ambiguity and support teams to deliver consistently in evolving problem spaces.

  • You’re a thoughtful people leader who invests in coaching, feedback, and long-term growth.

  • You care deeply about building environments where diverse perspectives are valued and everyone feels they belong.

If you don’t meet every single requirement but this role excites you, we encourage you to apply. Research shows that women and underrepresented groups are less likely to apply unless they meet 100% of the criteria — at Canva, we value potential and growth as much as experience.

About the team

The Design Experience supergroup is on a mission to build powerful and simple tools that empower anyone to design anything. Within that, the Video group is shaping the future of storytelling at Canva — enabling creators, educators, teams, and enterprises to bring ideas to life through dynamic, engaging video.

The Edge AI team works at the intersection of systems engineering, ML inference, and cross-platform native development. Together, we’re shaping how AI runs directly on user devices — improving latency, strengthening privacy, and enabling offline-capable creative workflows at global scale.

What’s in it for you?

We’re driven by big goals — and we work hard to achieve them — but we also make space for growth, connection, and wellbeing.

Here’s a taste of what’s on offer:

  • Equity packages — we want our success to be yours too

  • An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, connection, office setup & more
