Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

As a global company, Stripe operates within a complex and interwoven web of laws, regulations, and financial partnerships. The Financial Crime Legal team is a team of in-house anti-financial crime specialists within Stripe’s Legal function responsible for helping to guide Stripe’s business and compliance teams through this challenging terrain. As part of this team, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide spectrum of novel and exciting legal issues every day, including in the context of supporting new product development, engaging with Stripe’s regulators, and shaping Stripe’s positions on policy developments.

What you’ll do

We are looking for an experienced legal counsel with experience advising on anti-money laundering and proceeds of crime laws in the APAC region to join our team. In this role, you will be a counsel to Stripe’s Financial Crimes Compliance team, which is responsible for day-to-day implementation of Stripe’s enterprise-wide financial crime prevention efforts. This role will focus primarily on anti-money laundering and proceeds of crime legal and regulatory issues, in particular advice and counsel to promote compliance with regimes in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and other jurisdictions where Stripe may operate. This role will focus secondarily on trade controls (economic sanctions, import and export controls, and anti-boycott) legal and regulatory issues in those jurisdictions and other anti-financial crime laws, including aspects of anti-corruption. You will have the opportunity in this role to contribute more broadly to other regulatory matters as well.

Join us and you will work with a great team and have the opportunity to solve complicated problems in a fast-moving environment!

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and support to Stripe’s business and compliance teams on issues related to anti-money laundering, as well as anti-bribery and corruption and trade controls regulations as needed
  • Provide transactional support, including advising on contractual provisions pertaining to financial crimes compliance across Stripe’s various products, and reviewing and advising on transactional due diligence pertaining to financial crimes
  • Counsel the Financial Crimes Compliance team on financial crimes-related filings and other regulatory submissions
  • Be responsible for responding to regulatory exams and other inquiries, and internal audits, including supporting document productions, regarding financial crimes matters
  • Work with outside counsel as necessary, including in representing Stripe before regulatory authorities in matters related to financial crimes legal issues
  • Advise on advocacy in connection with contemplated and proposed laws, rules and regulations
  • Regularly report to senior management to ensure they are appropriately apprised of matters of legal and regulatory risk
  • Develop content for and deliver training to internal audiences on financial crimes legal issues
  • Identify and evaluate business and legal risks, and find creative ways to mitigate them while achieving business goals

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • At least 3 years of post-qualification experience at a leading law firm, in-house legal department, or agency focusing on trade controls
  • Experience in anti-money laundering regulations, particularly those promulgated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore or the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre
  • Experience advising compliance programs, including on the development of compliance policies and procedures and risk mitigation frameworks
  • Experience engaging directly with anti-money laundering competent authorities
  • Excellent skills in issue spotting, risk assessment, and problem-solving
  • Strong strategic thinking capabilities to enable business partners to make decisions that are grounded in a practical application of the law, technology, and business goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Integrity and sound judgment
  • Qualification in and ability to practice in Singapore, Australia, or New Zealand

Preferred qualifications

  • Able to provide difficult and complex legal advice in a clear and convincing manner to various stakeholders, including senior management
  • Able to multitask and work effectively and independently under pressure
  • Able to make sound decisions in the face of ambiguity and imperfect information
  • A proven leader with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build consensus across myriad groups
  • Familiar with the payments industry and applicable regulations, as well as issues impacting the broader banking and financial services industry
  • A team player who is willing to pitch in wherever needed in a fast-paced, growing company
  • Passionate about Stripe's mission to increase the GDP of the internet
