About our team

Telstra’s Corporate Affairs, Risk, & Legal (CARL) team guide, counsel and provide direction across the business on a range of matters to protect, enhance and shape Telstra’s reputation, influence outcomes and help deliver on our transformation strategy.  You’ll be joining us at a dynamic and exciting time for the company, as we evolve what our business is, and how we go about performing it.

Role Purpose

  • As a First Nations Paralegal (Targeted Role), you thrive on working closely with an experienced team of legal advisers who have the judgment and passion to deliver brilliant legal advice, solutions, and outcomes. You enjoy assisting your team with legal matters by performing activities to an excellent standard. Your exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, combined with your ability to manage competing demands from multiple stakeholders is what makes you outstanding in your role.

  • As part of your role, you will participate in a 12-month secondment with Gilbert + Tobin, an award-winning corporate law firm, working in one or more of their dynamic and fast paced legal groups. The secondment is designed to give you a private practice experience whilst developing your technical legal skills. Once you return from your secondment, subject to meeting performance criteria, you will be converted to legal counsel with the CARL team where you will begin your in-house legal career! 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertaking legal research and analysis

  • Drafting and reviewing various legal and commercial documents, including contracts and marketing

  • Giving support that is clear, commercial, fit-for-purpose and tailored to the audience

  • Being well organized and delivering on agreed commitments

  • Developing proficiency in technology tools and agile ways of working

  • Working well in a team and being flexible to support other teams in peak periods of demand or business priorities

  • Building strong, trusting relationships with the lawyers and clients you support and being able to deliver difficult messages whilst maintaining an effective relationship

  • Reinforcing with clients the appropriate ways of engaging with the legal team to drive adoption

  • Identifying opportunities to stop or more efficiently manage work of low strategic priority to Telstra and support the implementation of necessary solutions

  • Attending internal and external training seminars.

About you:

  • You must identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to be eligible to apply for this role.

To be successful in the role, you'll have:

  • A high level of organisational and communication skills (written and oral)

  • An ability to multi-task and work within designated timeframes

  • A demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships, along with strong stakeholder management skills

  • The ability to work well in a team in a highly collaborative way

  • Quick thinking and enthusiastic problem-solving abilities

  • Experience with Microsoft products Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Proactive approach

  • Legal research

Education:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)

  • Admission to practice in the relevant jurisdiction (or working towards)

  • Undergraduate studies in Arts, Commerce, Business, Economics or Science (desirable but not essential)

Location

The Gilbert + Tobin secondment is Sydney-based, but when you return to Telstra, you will have the flexibility to work where, when, and how you are most engaged, safe, and productive – wherever in Australia that may be.
