About Group Internal Audit

GIA is the internal audit function of Telstra Corporation Limited (Telstra), and acts as Telstra’s ‘third line of defence’ within the Telstra Risk Management Framework. GIA provides the Audit & Risk Committee and Management independent and objective assurance on the effectiveness of governance, risk management and internal controls.

GIA is led by the GIA Executive, supported by three Principal Internal Auditors and a team of Internal Audit Managers and Senior Internal Auditors. GIA also uses subject matter experts and resources from third party providers (such as Professional Services firms) as / when required.

The role with GIA

Reporting to one of the Principals within GIA, as the Internal Audit Manager you will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality risk-based audit coverage to ensure GIA achieves its mission and purpose.

You will be responsible day to day for the delivery of high quality risk-based audit coverage to ensure Group Internal Audit (GIA) achieves its mission and purpose.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of the annual GIA Plan.
  • Manage the day-to-day delivery of the GIA Plan.
  • Work alongside co-sourced providers on specific engagements, coaching and supporting more junior team members as / where appropriate.
  • Lead and / or conduct internal audit engagements as defined by the annual GIA Plan, in addition to engagements / reviews outside the approved Plan as requested by the Audit and Risk Committee, GIA Executive or Principals.
  • Proactively prioritise tasks on an ongoing basis to accommodate changing team and business requirements.
  • Build stakeholder relationships to stay abreast of emerging external and internal risks and issues facing the business.
  • Understand the stakeholder’s business (overview, objectives, etc), the key risks to objectives, and the controls and processes used to manage those risks prior to commencing detailed testing, and design and conduct tests to effectively and efficiently evaluate the operation of the controls in place.
  • Ensure all work is performed and documented in compliance with established GIA Methodology and IIA standards, ensuring all workpapers contain sufficient audit evidence on which to base conclusions, with all judgements, assumptions and decisions fully documented.
  • Ensure that business stakeholders are kept up to date on audit progress and findings so that we deliver a "no surprises" report to management.
  • Lead and undertake the follow-up of actions and reporting of action status.
  • Prepare reports of audit findings (including actions to address identified control weaknesses) and escalate through senior members of GIA and key audit stakeholders within agreed timeframes.

About you

To be successful in the role, you will have the following skills/experience:

  • Strong audit/assurance/risk management experience in a major corporate or chartered accounting firm.
  • “Big 4” experience desirable.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification essential (e.g. Accounting, Commerce, Business, or IT Systems), with CIA/CA/CISA desirable.
  • Proven experience in successfully leading and / or working on complex internal audit engagements.
  • Strong relationship management skills, with evidence of working effectively with, negotiating with and influencing, business executives.
  • Strong communications and presentation skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Clear / strategic thinking and analytical skills.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing teams to deliver a shared outcome.
  • Understanding of the Telecommunications industry (not required, but will be looked upon favourably).
