As an Investment Banking Lawyer (Capital Markets and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A)) in the Legal team, you will provide legal support and advice to JPMorgan's Investment Banking business in Japan and APAC. You will engage in both transactional and non-transactional matters, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Your role will involve collaborating with local, regional and global teams to implement effective legal strategies and support new business initiatives. This position is ideal for a Japan-qualified lawyer eager to tackle new challenges and contribute to a leading global investment bank.
Job responsibilities

  • Provide legal support and advice to JPMorgan's Investment Banking business in Japan and APAC, including both transactional matters (Capital Markets and M&A) and non-transactional matters (including regulatory issues and general corporate affairs)
  • Review, draft, and negotiate transactional and other documents related to the covered businesses in Japan and APAC
  • Analyze relevant laws and regulations to evaluate and assess their impacts on the covered businesses, and advise on the regulatory aspects of the covered businesses
  • Collaborate with local, regional and global Business, Compliance, and Controls teams regarding legal and regulatory matters relating to the covered businesses, whether originating in Japan or elsewhere in APAC, to establish and implement policies, procedures, and processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Provide legal advice for local, regional, and global new business initiatives, products, templates, and platforms
  • Participate in local, regional, and global project teams relating to regulatory developments, requests, exams, and/or audits
  • Assist in developing a disciplined control environment within JPMorgan, and identify and mitigate legal and other risks
  • Manage outside counsel in connection with the above work streams


Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Qualification as a Japanese lawyer, with a minimum of 4 years of post-qualification experience gained at a top tier law firm or financial institution
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and legal analytical skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work well in a cross-functional and cross-jurisdictional team to achieve shared goals
  • Ability to prioritize business needs and goals, and to identify and escalate material issues in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Proactive approach to building strong relationships with internal stakeholders and collaborating to address challenges in a highly dynamic work environment
  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Fluency in English and Japanese, both written and spoken


Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Experience with cross-border investment banking transactions, specifically in Capital Markets and M&A, is advantageous
