We’re looking for an experienced Leading Hand to join our team in Cairns to support ongoing operations at our Liberty Street Engine facility. This is a Permanent, Monday-Thursday role designed to support workshop operations ensuring jobs are completed safely, efficiently and to the highest of standards.
What you’ll be doing
As a Leading Hand at Hastings Deering, you will:
- Assisting with Job Planning – providing the team with job planning, resource allocation and quality control.
- Provide supervision, leadership and guidance – to workshop tradespeople and apprentices, overseeing daily workshop activities to meet production targets.
- Build and maintain relationships – build and maintain rapport with internal and external stakeholders and customers to ensure smooth workflow and timely delivery of services.
- Quote, plan, and schedule work - to meet customer requirements and operational targets as well as communicating effectively regarding job progress.
- Drive continuous improvement - by recommending effective and efficient solutions to customers and the broader Hastings Deering business.
- Deliver strong customer service and product knowledge - to increase business performance and sales.
- Monitor team time management - to maximise efficiency and productivity.

What you’ll need:
A successful teammate will have experience in:
- Relevant Trade Qualification – demonstrated service and repair experience on CAT building, civil construction, agricultural and earthmoving equipment as well as industrial and marine engines.
- Leadership background – the ability to supervise and lead a team (advantageous)
- Engine Experience – previous experience working in the industry, with strong background of engine works.
- Software – prior knowledge of CAT diagnostic and information systems (SIS)
- Strong communicator – excellent communication skills with a genuine customer focus.
- Organised and efficient – strong time management skills to keep jobs on track.
- Team player – able to work well with others as well as independently when required.
- Safety minded – committed to maintaining high workplace health and safety standards at all times.
