At Cochlear, we offer something rare — a Sydney-based opportunity with regional and global impact. As Legal and Compliance Counsel working from our regional head office, you will collaborate closely with global legal and commercial stakeholders across APAC and Latin America. 

 

The Legal and Compliance Counsel, APAC and Latin America (LA) will implement and coordinate Cochlear's compliance program across APAC and Latin America and provide timely and commercial legal advice to the region. This includes developing compliance policies, maintaining compliance records, supporting the due diligence of third-party business partners as well as providing general legal advice to the commercial business. 
 
The position requires a commercially minded lawyer with 3 to 5 years' post-qualification experience who is able to work independently, efficiently and effectively to manage a high volume of legal matters and projects.  The role will interact proactively with internal stakeholders to ensure that they continue to receive solutions-oriented services from a highly regarded Legal and Compliance function.  

The Legal and Compliance Counsel will have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience working as part of a high-performing regional in-house corporate legal and compliance team. He/she will gain exposure to international jurisdictions and experience working closely with colleagues across APAC and LA.

As the Legal and Compliance Counsel, you will: 

  • Implement and enhance Cochlear's compliance program across APAC & LA, ensuring adherence to anti-bribery and corruption policies and third-party due diligence processes. 

  • Provide timely, commercially relevant legal advice to internal stakeholders on a wide range of business matters. 

  • Develop, enhance, and monitor compliance policies, training programs, and risk assessments. 

  • Lead investigations into compliance violations and drive effective remediation strategies. 

  • Negotiate, draft, and review commercial contracts to support business growth. 

  • Support dispute resolution processes, litigation management, and risk mitigation strategies. 

  • Collaborate with the Global Legal team to strengthen our corporate legal and compliance framework. 

About You. 

You are a legal professional with 3-5 years post qualification experience with strong commercial acumen and the ability to manage high-volume legal matters effectively. You thrive in cross-functional, multicultural environments and proactively deliver solutions-oriented legal support. 

 

What We’re Looking For 

Essential: 

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree & admission as a lawyer in New South Wales 

  • 3- 5 years post-admission experience in commercial law 

  • Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills 

  • Proven ability to provide practical, commercially sound legal advice 

  • Experience implementing  compliance programs, risk assessment, and due diligence 

Preferred: 

  • Experience in the medical devices, healthcare, or life sciences industry 

  • Top-tier law firm background 

  • Exposure to APAC & LA markets 

  • Fluency in Mandarin, Korean, or Japanese
