We have an exciting opportunity to join our Legal team in Sydney and are currently looking for a Legal Counsel to join the in-house team.

As Legal Counsel, you will play a key role in managing VGW’s legal affairs and providing strategic legal guidance across a wide range of matters, primarily within North American jurisdictions. This role involves partnering closely with the business to manage risk and deliver pragmatic advice on legal, regulatory and governance issues.

You will provide legal support on litigation, arbitration, regulatory responses, and commercial matters, while working with cross-functional teams to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee and instruct external counsel on defence strategy and case preparation in defending consumer arbitrations, as well as develop broader resolution strategies with the business.
  • Take ownership of a high-volume caseload, overseeing document production, evidence preparation, and document management.
  • Assist the broader legal team with additional litigation matters, including class actions.
  • Provide commercial and regulatory advice, including reviewing agreements, terms & conditions and internal policies.
  • Assist with regulatory responses as required and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Keep internal stakeholders informed of case strategy and developments, while contributing to team initiatives and fostering a collaborative working culture.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience at a reputable law firm and/or with strong relevant in-house experience, including significant litigation defence expertise. Exposure to regulatory investigations or response work is considered advantageous.
  • Admitted to practice law in Australia with a current practising certificate.
  • Proven ability to independently manage and take responsibility for a high-volume caseload, demonstrating strong organisational skills to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to review and manage large data sets while extracting key insights.
  • Demonstrated integrity, ethical decision-making, and adherence to professional standards.
