THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for an in-house Legal Specialist to apply their legal and workers compensation expertise in managing and resolving claims involving litigation.
As a Legal Specialist, you will lead the preparation and strategic management of Work Injury Damages (WID) claims, handle statutory litigation in the Personal Injury Commission and other legally based matters, contribute to legal project work, and provide support to EML’s Specialist Insurance Group claims teams and policyholders.
Reporting to the Legal Manager within the Hospitality Industry Insurance business unit, you will play a key role in meeting EML’s performance targets and organisational objectives while delivering a high level of service to stakeholders.
This will be a permanent, full time position based in our Sydney office, with flexibility to work from home up to 2 days per week.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the claims team by providing legal advice on legislative, regulatory, legal, policy and guidelines affecting workers’ compensation claims to enable sound, evidence-based and legally accurate decision making.
- Work closely with the external legal panel providers to ensure a high level of legal advice, and effective litigation strategy to drive optimum outcomes.
- Attend legal proceedings as EML’s representation together with the external Legal Provider representative.
- Participate in strategic review of claims portfolio, including presenting to employers about general legal concepts or individual cases.
- Keeping up to date with case law and precedents affecting claims, premium and the scheme.
ABOUT YOU
- Bachelor of Laws or tertiary studies in personal injury, workers compensation, legal studies, or ADR (advantageous but not essential).
- 2–3 years PQE in Workers Compensation (WID and statutory claims) or 3+ years’ case management experience in workers compensation.
- Strong knowledge of Workers Compensation legislation and related regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex claims or litigation in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven stakeholder management and communication skills.
- NSW Practising Certificate desirable, but not required.
