The role contributes to the delivery of high-quality library services that meet the educational, recreational and information needs of Hume’s diverse community by providing accessible, relevant and innovative resources, facilitating lifelong learning opportunities, and delivering exceptional customer and information services that enhance community engagement and inclusion.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Undertake direct customer service duties at any Hume Libraries branch as required including evening and weekend shifts.
  • When rostered as the Shift Supervisor, ensure the effective operation of the library by directing staff as necessary.
  • Ensure that opening and closing procedures are correctly implemented when rostered at beginning or end of the day.
  • Work as part of a team to provide high-quality customer service for the Hume Community.
  • When rostered as Shift Supervisor report any issues relating to the operation of the branch to the Team Leader.
  • Assist with delivery of programs and activities as required.
  • Assist Team Leader and collection champions with collection maintenance as directed.
  • Ensure timely shelving of library material.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality information services, including proficient use of both electronic and print based information resources to meet the diverse needs of library users.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of books and literature, including experience in library collection development and maintenance.
  • Strong customer service skills, with the ability to resolve library requests in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills and the ability to supervise staff and manage a rostered shift.
  • The ability to plan and organise work, including managing own’s work, to achieve specific and set objectives in the most efficient way possible with resources available and within a set timetable.
  • Ability to identify customer needs and expectations, decide the appropriate action and respond accordingly.
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills including the ability to gain cooperation from and communicate with a broad range of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • Graduate Diploma in Information Management or equivalent; or lesser formal qualifications with work skills and relevant experience working in Public Libraries or a similar environment.
  • Facilitating eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association.
  • Current Driver’s Licence.
  • Current Employee Working with Children check.
