The Opportunity: Bring complex mechanisms to life.
Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Mechanical Systems Engineer to join our engineering team in Melbourne (Fishermans Bend). This is a hands-on role focused on the detailed design, spatial integration, and technical realization of mechanical and fluid systems.
As a Mechanical Systems Engineer, you won't just study theories-you will be in the thick of the design process. You will work on the intricate details of system installations, from optimizing mechanism movements like landing gear to managing the thermal and fluid environments that keep our platforms operational. If you are a detail-oriented engineer who enjoys the challenge of spatial integration and seeing your designs move from a CAD model to a functioning physical assembly, this is your opportunity.
Role Description
As a Mechanical Systems Engineer, you are a key driver of technical detail. You will support the development of mechanical and fluid system requirements and translate those into high-quality design documentation. You will focus on the "how" of engineering: performing detailed design modifications, ensuring components fit perfectly within complex spatial constraints, and supporting the integration of critical systems such as landing gear or ordnance mechanisms. You will work under general direction, collaborating closely with downstream production teams and suppliers to ensure design integrity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Detailed Design & Optimization: Perform detailed design and modification of mechanical and fluid system installations. You will apply multi-disciplinary trade studies and integrated optimization tools to evaluate configuration alternatives, ensuring the best balance of functional performance and spatial integration.
  • Advanced Modeling & Mathematical Analysis: Apply advanced mathematical principles (including calculus, differential equations, probability, and numerical analysis) to perform high-fidelity aerospace modeling. You will utilize computational geometry and optimization techniques to simulate and validate system behavior.
  • Spatial Integration & Multi-Perspective Evaluation: Lead the spatial integration of components at the system level, solving complex "fit and function" challenges. You will evaluate complex vehicles from multiple perspectives, using figures of merit to ensure seamless integration of mechanisms, landing gear, and specialized hardware.
  • Aircraft Systems Integration: Support the design and integration of critical aircraft systems, including hydraulics, egress systems, and mechanical components of avionics, engines, and landing gear. You will also interface with teams managing loadable/non-loadable software (e.g., inertial navigation or operational flight programs) to ensure hardware-software synergy.
  • Requirement Support & Documentation: Assist in the development and documentation of mechanical, fluid, and thermal environment requirements. Prepare high-quality technical documentation and design proposals to support downstream manufacturing and customer delivery.
  • Analysis & Troubleshooting: Use engineering data and advanced mathematical modeling to analyze, troubleshoot, and redesign components to improve performance, reliability, and ease of assembly.
  • Manufacturing & Supplier Liaison: Support supplier technical activities and production readiness to ensure that manufactured parts align perfectly with design intent.
  • Proposal Support: Contribute technical expertise to new business development and cost proposal efforts, helping to shape the future of our product offerings.

To be considered for the role, you will have:
Essential:
  • Mechanical Engineering Expertise: Proven experience in mechanical component design, including familiarity with fluid systems and thermal environments.
  • Advanced Analytical & Modeling Skills: Ability to apply advanced mathematical principles (e.g., calculus, differential equations, statistics, or numerical linear algebra) to aerospace analysis and system modeling.
  • Design Proficiency: Strong hands-on experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems, 3DX, and mathematical/simulation modeling software.
  • Integration Skills: Demonstrated ability to perform spatial integration and manage the complex "fit" of mechanical systems within a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Systems Knowledge: A foundational understanding of aircraft systems (e.g., hydraulic, electrical, or egress) and the ability to model them at appropriate levels of fidelity.
  • Security Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance.
  • Citizenship: Must be an Australian Citizen to meet Defence security requirements.

Desirable (The "Edge"):
  • Mechanism Specialization: Practical experience designing or modifying complex mechanisms (e.g., landing gear, deployment systems, or ordnance).
  • Computational Expertise: Experience with discrete and continuous systems, transform methods, or advanced optimization algorithms.
  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Familiarity with advanced fabrication processes, including machining, forming, or composite lay-up.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Knowledge of aerospace design and certification standards (e.g., MILSPEC).
  • Domain Expertise: Prior experience within the Aerospace or Defence sectors.
