Role Purpose – Operational Risk Specialist

Are you passionate about strengthening risk culture and driving operational excellence? As an Operational Risk Specialist, you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting the Risk and Support divisions by embedding robust risk and compliance practices across the business.

In this role, you’ll be the go-to expert for assessing operational risks, ensuring Line 1 compliance, and collaborating closely with Risk Advisory, Legal, and Operations teams. You’ll lead initiatives that enhance governance, streamline processes, help to grow and develop the understanding of risk management, and elevate our risk maturity—contributing directly to the success of our programs and the resilience of our operations.

You’ll be hands-on in making risk part of the everyday culture, take stakeholders along on the journey of risk management, reviewing policies, supporting the identification and remediation of incidents and issues, undertake control assurance, conducting deep-dive reviews, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. Your work will help shape a proactive, forward-thinking risk culture that supports strategic decision-making and operational integrity.

Skills, Knowledge & Attributes

A strong grasp of risk and control frameworks, with the ability to apply them practically and bring to life the everyday management of risk.

Excellent communication skills—able to translate complex legal, regulatory, and policy concepts into clear, actionable insights.

Confident facilitator of workshops and risk assessments, engaging stakeholders across all levels.

Sharp analytical mindset with a keen eye for detail—able to dissect processes, uncover risks, and spot compliance gaps.

An ability to bring process improvements off the back of risk events.

Understand and provide guidance on delivered risk through a period of change.

Skilled in root cause analysis and developing pragmatic, sustainable solutions.

Proactive, curious, and always seeking clarity—whether giving or receiving direction.

Adaptable and resilient in the face of change, new information, or shifting priorities.

Experienced in crafting insightful reports and dashboards that inform leadership and governance.

Highly organised, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and deliver on time.

Experience

At least 5 years’ experience in Financial Services, ideally with a focus on insurance, risk, or compliance.

Minimum 3 years in risk & compliance or corporate governance roles.

Qualifications

Tertiary qualifications in Compliance, Business, Commerce, Finance, or Law.

Knowledge of ISO 31000 Risk Management is highly desirable.

Relevant insurance qualifications are a plus
