Payment Partnerships Manager, Local Payment Methods

Adyen is looking for a Payment Partnerships Manager who will drive Adyen’s local payment method (LPM) strategy in Japan. In this role, you’ll take ownership of relationships with key domestic payment partners such as PayPay, Rakuten Pay, convenience store and Pay-easy (local banking network) schemes, and other alternative local payment providers to grow Adyen’s relevance and capabilities in the Japanese payments ecosystem.

You’ll be responsible for deepening and expanding Adyen’s partnerships with these LPMs and ensuring we bring the best possible offering to our merchants. Internally, you will work closely with cross-functional teams (Product, Commercial, Compliance, Legal, Finance, etc.) to drive strategic alignment, onboard new LPMs, and optimize performance of existing integrations. You’ll also act as an internal subject matter expert for domestic payment methods in Japan.

What you’ll do

  • Own and manage Adyen’s portfolio of local Japanese payment method partners — from day-to-day operational work to high-level strategic alignment.
  • Define and drive a long-term LPM strategy in Japan, identifying product gaps, merchant needs, and partnership opportunities to expand our coverage.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to support LPM build, feature improvements, and roadmap prioritization.
  • Work closely with global/local commercial teams to ensure go-to-market readiness and provide merchant-facing teams with necessary product/market context.
  • Advocate for local partners about the internal needs while representing Adyen’s standards and merchant requirements externally.
  • Support commercial negotiations to achieve favorable terms for Adyen and our merchants.
  • Track and analyze partner performance and market trends to identify optimization or growth opportunities.
  • Educate internal stakeholders on local payment trends, user behavior, and product nuances to drive adoption and excellence.
  • Negotiate preferential terms with payments partners for our merchants or Adyen.

Who you are

  • You have 8+ years of experience in the payments or fintech space, preferably within Japanese domestic payment methods (e.g. QR wallets, BNPL, bank transfers, convenience store payments, etc.).
  • You understand the local payment landscape in Japan and have experience working with local payment schemes, e-money providers, or domestic acquiring partners.
  • You’re comfortable navigating both strategic conversations and detailed operational work — from long-term roadmaps to merchant onboarding for payment method activation.
  • You have excellent communication and relationship-building skills, and can work cross-functionally across product, engineering, operations, and commercial teams.
  • You enjoy constructive relationships building with each layer, from front-line staff to executives, when dealing with partner companies has traditional Japanese corporate culture (JTC).
  • You’re proactive, structured, and able to independently manage complex work streams.
  • You’re fluent in Japanese (native-level) and can communicate effectively in English at a business level.
  • You’re passionate about improving the merchant experience and enabling frictionless local payment experiences for end users.
