Portfolio Manager, Domestic Hedging / Rates

We are seeking an experienced Portfolio Manager to support ALM’s domestic interest rate and inflation hedging activity. The role will focus on the outperformance of a range of AusBond and interest rate swap benchmarks and offers broad exposure to CLC’s asset and liability management activities with a focus on domestic interest rate and inflation-linked derivatives and cash markets.

The role sits in Challenger Life Company (CLC). CLC is Australia’s largest provider of annuities, managing $25 billion in assets as at 31 December 2024. Asset Liability and Management (ALM) and Liquids teams, forms part of CLC’s investments team, responsible for the hedging of CLC’s interest rate, foreign currency and index linked exposures and for managing short term liquid investment strategy.

What we are looking for:

The ideal candidate will have extensive dealing and portfolio management experience in Australian financial markets, including exposure to derivatives. Given the quantitative and technical requirements of the role, the individual should be highly numerate with advanced analytical and modelling abilities and a focus on risk management.

The individual must be self-motivated and able to think creatively and independently. Being “hands-on”, showing attention to detail and a having a strong commercial perspective are prerequisites.

Role responsibilities:

  • Management and execution of Australian interest rate and inflation hedging activity.
  • Identify, develop, and implement hedging strategies that generate attractive risk adjusted returns relative to agreed internal and AusBond benchmarks.
  • Develop models for risk management of new transactions and products and identify relative value opportunities.
  • Support retail and institutional distribution and product teams with market insights.

The experience required to be successful:

  • 7+ years relevant industry experience and exposure to fixed income markets, derivatives, and financial risk management.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial markets and investment products.
  • Proven analytical and critical thinking abilities to evaluate complex alternatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely. 
  • A tertiary qualification with a strong GPA in Finance, Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong numeracy and modelling capabilities.
