Retail Technology is responsible for the world-leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of CommBank and Bankwest Retail - from innovative product platforms for our customers, to essential tools within our business. We also use technology to drive simplicity and better banking, an essential component of great customer service underpinning a strong emphasis on software development as a craft and the adoption of industry best engineering practices.

You’ll be part of Mobile Engineering Native team which is responsible for the technology direction and core functions that underpin our award winning CommBank Mobile App for both iOS and Android. We support over 200 engineers deliver highly engaging experiences to our 8.5 million+ digital active customers. Whether you’re driven by using data to build fascinating apps, or you’re passionate about your creativity when designing one, you will feel at home with us. As a Principal Engineer, you will help to shape the future of our android mobile platform while focusing on designing, developing, and deploying innovative technology solutions that will enable us to build tomorrow's bank today. You’ll use your skills in the leading the engineers and implementing complex innovative Android solutions that are scalable, resilient, and efficient. Also, you’ll have a strong risk mindset in ensuring that appropriate cyber security controls are implemented and play a significant mentoring role in providing technical assistance to the engineers in the team.

  • Have ability to design technology solutions to meet the highest possible quality standards while simultaneously balancing security, performance, availability, and maintainability concerns.

  • Delivers core technical strategies to achieve business outcomes by acting as a bridge between business and technical teams.

  • Designs and implements innovative technical solutions to complex problems, including onboarding and migrating to new tooling as well as removing obsolete systems and code.

  • Are well versed with solution architecture, technology blueprints, engineering roadmaps, and translating the project vision into actionable plans.

  • Can influence teams across boundaries and connect the dots between programs of work, to ensure faster decision making for organizational wide outcomes.

  • Encourages risk-taking and constructively challenges the status quo while influencing stakeholders and building diverse and inclusive teams.

Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

  • Deep expertise with end-to-end design and development of Android applications

  • Proficient with Java/Kotlin

  • Thorough understanding of large-scale distributed systems, solution design and architecture principles

  • Solid understanding of Android design principles and interface guideline.

  • An expert with Android SDK as well as keeping up to date with latest Android development practices 

  • Knowledge of RESTful services 

  • Advance knowledge in source control management such as Git and Gitflow 

  • Experience with CI/CD and exposure to testing automation 

  • Passion for delivering quality customer experience as well as writing quality code for reusability and scalability 

  • Exceptional sense for design with an ability to see an app through conception, development, testing and release 

  • Solid enterprise application architecture experience in design patterns, concurrency and performance 

  • Keeping up-to-date with latest trends in Android development with a passion to pitch to peers and senior management new ideas to turn to reality
