Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work - whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.
The role
Compass is Atlassian's developer experience platform, allowing engineering organizations to track the software they've built. It provides a central place for those organizations to operate and build software, and enables engineers and the organization as a whole to track the health of that software and understand team performance. Compass is looking for a Product Designer for our standardization team.
You'll be responsible for delivering new ways for organizations to standardize the software they create, ensuring they deliver high quality, compliant code. You'll work on ways for central teams to set high level quality goals for their organizations and help teams over time meet those goals. You'll evolve existing experiences and Atlassian design patterns to meet new Compass-specific requirements. One day you'll work with Atlassian's design systems team to understand an existing construct outside of Compass, and the next you'll whiteboard with your PM and Engineering partners on how to evolve that construct for Compass. You'll participate in design critiques with design leads to share your directional concepts and evolve your work. You may do usability testing of some of your concepts to identify any gaps in your approach, and you'll work with internal teams to gather feedback on your ideas, too. But most of all you'll work with a collaborative design team working in a relatively new domain on interesting projects!
Compass enables organizations to improve their developer's experience, and the Compass team is focused on delivering user-centered solutions that help our customers meet that goal. Together, we'll empower our customers to help their software teams be successful.
What you'll do

  • Transform and modernize software practice in our customer's organizations through innovative design that are simple and elegant, while being powerful and enterprise-grade
  • Work cross-functionally with Product and Engineering partners to represent the design team and advocate for user needs
  • Design end-to-end experiences between Compass and the greater Atlassian product ecosystem, from concept to pixel-perfect design
  • Conduct user interviews and usability tests to help you know how to best serve customers and understand the quality of your work
  • Contribute to vision, roadmapping, design critique, sprint planning, and product and design channels.
  • Contribute to the Atlassian Design System
  • Inspire a culture of design excellence, where innovation is the norm.

  • 2+ years of product design experience
  • Experience in Product Design organizations that have shipped software to users, working closely with Product and Engineering teammates to develop the strategy and rationale for features.
  • Demonstrable experience working with data, conducting and measuring product design experiments, and a passion for setting and achieving OKRs and metrics that materially impact the business.
  • Experience collaborating with teams to build technical, business-to-business products is a plus
  • An outstanding portfolio, with presentable case studies showcasing a foundation in typography, interaction and visual design, product sense, and idea generation.
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse team in a rapid growth environment. Huge plus if you've worked with remote teammates and understand the communication patterns of working with highly distributed teams.
  • A learning and growth mindset: We strive to continuously improve, iterate, and integrate what we learn - from our work and with each other.
  • Experience with prototyping as a means to explore and convey design solutions.
  • Empathy and resilience: empathy for our customers, to build a product and a service they'll love. Empathy for our coworkers, to build a workplace we'll love. Resilience to be able to take feedback from anywhere, consider it gracefully, and fold it into your thinking and your work.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and storytelling skills
