About the Role
Our BDO Audit & Assurance service line is seeking a Senior Auditor in the Technology Risk Assurance (TRA) team.
We’re a specialist team within Audit, focused on delivering tech-enabled solutions across the full audit lifecycle—from planning to completion. Our mission is to enhance audit methodologies and support financial statement audits through:
Enabling Audit Data Analytics via the BDO Advantage – Harmony platform
Assisting engagement teams in understanding and documenting IT environments
Providing expertise in evaluating and testing IT General Controls (ITGC) and IT Application Controls (ITAC)
Duties and Responsibilities:
Scoping:
Is able to communicate knowledge of industry, regulatory, and other external factors relevant to the engagement prior to commencement of audit work.
Planning:
Understands and assessing the risk and complexity of clients’ IT environment and independently completes documents required in planning for a complex engagement
Co-ordinates and assists team members in the completion of planning documents for complex engagements with supervision
Provides assistance to other team members in their completion of the walkthrough on a complex engagement
Completes the evaluate controls screen to identify controls addressing identified risks.
Obtain Evidence:
Completes the audit of all IT risks for an audit engagement and communicates issues identified to the engagement manager
Completes the audit of IT risks for an audit engagement with no supervision, including where required, communicates issues identified with those management
Reviews technology processes supporting the business and ascertaining the adequacy of IT controls, process efficiency and compliance with relevant framework and company policies
Examines internal IT controls, evaluating the design, implementation and operational effectiveness of: IT General Controls (ITGC), IT Application Controls
Evaluates conclusions of audit tests and where appropriate, discuss with audit engagement team to link IT Control failures or deficiencies to business operation to adapt audit procedures to address the IT risks identified.
Identifies audit issues in assigned areas and communicates to the manager
Identifies areas where application of the audit approach can be improved.
Completion:
Prepares initial draft(s) of potential control weaknesses to be communicated to TCWG and, as appropriate, management
Assists with audit completion reports for complex engagements with limited supervision (no supervision for non-complex client) for IT deficiencies identified
Engagement Performance:
Providing constructive feedback, including in appraisals and directly to staff on a regular basis and in a timely manner
Prepares and monitor budget for complex engagements
Supervises junior team members in completion of designated tasks, including ensuring the communication of identified audit issues in a timely manner
Ongoing coaching and mentoring of junior staff in understanding audit process under your supervision
Escalates to manager and partner if discrepancies exist between actual and budget figures
Determines exposure to risk and develop recommendations / remediation strategies
Recommends practical and value-added solutions to management to improve operations, reduce costs and minimize risks
Has a sound grasp of technical issues and is able to identify when consulting is required, performing the appropriate research and documenting the issue to facilitate review.
TRA specific competencies:
Designs, performs and documents testing of ITGC and IT Automated controls on complex IT applications in accordance with BDO Audit & Assurance approach
Work collaboratively with technical experts to develop and implement procedures for extracting and analysing large and diverse data sets from widely used Financial Applications
Extract and process data from a variety of systems and reports and undertake data validation to ensure data integrity and accuracy is retained when performing Audit & Assurance Data Analytics setup
Liaising with internal stakeholders to identify needs based on the type of Audit & Assurance Data Analytics to be performed to ensure relevant information is extracted and appropriately presented
Upload processed information/data on BDO Audit Data Analytics tools perform data integrity checks and identify data anomalies before sharing with the requestors
Assisting in the development and customisation of visualization templates and dashboards for Audit & Assurance Data Analytics.
Skills/Attributes Required:
Experience in IT Risk Assurance
Experience with financial applications such as TechnologyOne, Microsoft Dynamics Suite, Oracle NetSuite, Xero, MYOB, etc
Experience with analysing large data sets using data analytic tools such as IDEA or PowerBi
Understanding of SQL, MS Excel, Data Extraction, and Data Mining tools.
