We are looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join our Design System Engineering (DSE) team in Sydney. DSE is the multidisciplinary team bringing together front-end engineering and UX expertise to help product teams create fast, accessible and consistently branded user interfaces.
Design systems are entering a new phase. As AI agents contribute more production code, the systems, standards and documentation that guide them need to work for machines as effectively as they do for people. The playbook is still emerging, which makes this a rare opportunity to help define it.
Our design system supports more than 30 engineering teams across four countries. The decisions you make here will influence how interfaces are created across a broad portfolio of products, giving you the opportunity to improve the quality of work well beyond a single team or application.
This is a hands-on senior role in a small, collaborative team. You’ll work closely with engineers and UX practitioners to evolve the design system, improve the quality of AI-generated interfaces and make good design easier to deliver at scale.
How You’ll Create Impact- Evolve our design system. Help develop our shared component library, front-end standards and supporting tools in partnership with the product and engineering teams that use them.
- Define what good looks like at scale. Establish practical standards for consistency, accessibility and brand expression as our product portfolio grows, and work with teams to make those standards easy to adopt.
- Improve AI-generated interfaces. Translate design and engineering intent into standards that automated pipelines can validate, helping close the gap between code that works and interfaces that are ready for production.
- Create guidance for people and agents. Develop component documentation and usage rules that are clear to engineers and effective as context for coding agents.
- Stay close to the implementation. Design and build solutions yourself, using your judgement to balance immediate product needs with the long-term health of the system.
- Grow capability across the team. Pair with UX practitioners as they build confidence with modern engineering and AI-assisted workflows, while helping engineers strengthen their design systems practice.
- Design systems experience. You’ve contributed meaningfully to a centralised design system, shared component library or UI framework, and understand what it takes to design for reuse and future needs.
- Front-end engineering strength. You bring strong hands-on experience with React and component-based architecture, and can design, build and review production-quality solutions.
- Practical UX fluency. You understand UX methods, accessibility and design intent, and can collaborate effectively with experienced designers without needing to be a product designer yourself.
- AI-assisted development experience. You use tools such as Claude Code or equivalent to delegate and complete substantive work as part of your regular engineering workflow.
- Judgement over agent-generated output. You can evaluate AI-generated code beyond whether it functions, including component choices, design-token usage, consistency and accessibility.
- Systems thinking. You’re energised by creating reusable foundations that improve the quality of many products and teams, rather than solving the same problem one interface at a time.
- Collaborative influence. You can explain and negotiate technical standards with both engineers and designers, building support for better ways of working without relying on formal authority.
You’re a front-end or design systems engineer who enjoys operating at the intersection of engineering and UX. You care about the details of a well-made interface, but you’re most energised by building the components, standards and automated guardrails that allow many teams to deliver that quality consistently.
You don’t need to be a senior product designer who codes. We’re looking for an accomplished engineer with genuine UX understanding, curiosity about agentic workflows and the confidence to help shape an emerging practice.
