Senior Engineer

The role / impact

You will own a flagship surface of the Xero ecosystem, leading the engineering efforts for the Xero App Store. This is the primary destination where customers discover and purchase apps that extend the capabilities of Xero, meaning your work directly influences revenue and delivers significant value to our global user base.

As a senior engineer, you will have a genuine seat at the table for architectural and product decisions. You won't just be completing tasks; you will influence the design across web surfaces, APIs, event processors, and data models to solve complex engineering problems at scale.

The team / how they connect

You will join the Bat team, a tight-knit and supportive group based in Auckland that is also open to collaborators in Melbourne. The team operates with a high level of autonomy, owning the full lifecycle of their services from initial design and build to deployment and reliability.

The team is currently working on

• Enhancing the App Store experience by integrating advanced AI tooling to improve the search and discovery process for our users.

• Scaling a modern frontend stack using React, TypeScript, and Redux, supported by a C# .NET 6 backend-for-frontend and REST APIs.

• Managing high-traffic, SEO-sensitive surfaces and event-driven integrations using .NET workers and Horizon streams.

• Refining the App Store pricing architecture to provide better visual clarity for customers during the purchasing workflow.

Where and how you can work

The team is primarily located in Auckland, New Zealand, but we are open to candidates based in Melbourne. We support a work environment that balances office-based connection with the flexibility required to do your best work.

Here are some of the things we are looking for

• You bring a wealth of experience in building responsive, high-quality frontends with React and TypeScript, balanced with a strong understanding of C# and .NET backends.

• A background in working with distributed systems and cloud services like AWS, including EC2, ECS, and Kubernetes, is something you'll use daily.

• You have a track record of making significant code design decisions and contributing to technical solution designs within a collaborative team.

• Your toolkit includes a solid understanding of data storage and caching, specifically with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Redis.

• You possess a growth mindset and an interest in mentoring others, helping to maintain high engineering standards across the pod.

• Experience with automated testing frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or Jest helps you ensure the reliability of the products you ship.
