Hey, hello, hiya, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.
Where and how you can work
Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.
What you'd be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Leading teams who build systems to generate ingredients (Images, Video, Graphics) - working closely with other ML engineers, backend engineers, frontend engineers, designers, and product managers to deliver cutting-edge ingredient generation systems and techniques that empower users to design.
  • Building alignment & momentum towards a common goal across teams and groups, connecting the dots from now to our long term product vision.
  • Partnering with product and design for road mapping, planning resourcing and goal setting, and taking the vision of the product and making it happen.
  • Growing a team vertically & horizontally - invest in our people & add new ones. Nurturing and growing skills in the team including following the latest advancements in the industry as well as good software engineering practices.
  • Creating a collaborative & open team environment, where everyone can do the best work of their lives.
  • Keeping situational awareness across multiple complicated workstreams & keeping the broader company informed.
  • Ruthlessly prioritise - keep us focused on the critical problems, and keep the noise away.
  • Collaborate with other Product, Research and Platform teams across the Generative AI Supergroup to achieve our goals.

You're probably a match if:

  • You have proven success in leading multiple squads of engineers, including team leads and you've got a track record of empowering other leaders and building a diverse team, while growing future leaders.
  • You are able to run multiple streams of work, rallying a wide range of people, teams, and groups across the organisation towards a common goal.
  • You can balance short-term pragmatism with a steadfast commitment to building the right thing for our long-term goals.
  • You have great research skills with the ability to stay abreast of the latest developments in deep learning and generative AI.
  • You have a proven track record in running long-term engineering projects and the ability to support the team to balance exploratory/innovative work with high priority feature delivery.
  • You can effectively communicate (inside the team and outside) the value of short- and long-term features, translating technical details to the business value, building support and trust from stakeholders.
  • You are firmly grounded in computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
  • You have previous experience as a ML Engineer or leading ML product teams would be advantageous.
