Senior Legal Counsel, 12-month MTC

Role Purpose:

The purpose of this role to assist Challenger with appropriately managing legal risks. This person will be responsible for providing commercially driven, timely and quality legal support to the Funds Management and Life business units of Challenger.  Focus areas for this role will be to support: (a) Challenger’s Fixed Income teams, including in relation to asset backed securities; whole loan transactions and mortgage servicing (b) Challenger Treasury team, including in relation to debt and hybrid funding programmes. 

The Corporate & Investments Legal Team is a driven, high-performing but very friendly and collegiate team of senior transaction lawyers focusing on delivering commercially driven, timely and quality legal support to a variety of business units within Challenger.  Whilst day-to-day legal work is primarily conducted on a reasonably autonomous basis, teamwork is highly valued. 

  • Advising the Challenger Investment Management (CIM) team on securitizations, whole loan transactions and other structured financing transactions, including reviewing and negotiating contracts and opinions and managing external counsel where relevant 
  • Advising the Treasury team on Challenger’s capital notes programmes, including documentation, internal approvals, and regulatory obligations 
  • Advising internal stakeholders on corporate transactions (e.g., debt / equity capital raisings, M&A transactions), corporate law issues, corporate contracts, and (when required) dispute matters. 

Role Requirements:

  • Good working knowledge of Corporations Act issues (including directors’ duties and related party transactions) and trusts.
  • Experience in identifying, assessing, evaluating, and managing risks within a Legal team/function. 
  • Minimum of 7 years PQE full-time experience in a large commercial law firm, or in-house legal department focusing on securitization, commercial contracts and general fixed income experience.
  • Good working knowledge of debt and equity capital markets transactions and general commercial contracts.
  • Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent).
  • Australian practicing certificate.
