The Senior Market Modelling Analyst will take a leading role in developing Iberdrola Australia’s energy market forecasts. These forecasts are developed using our internal market model and are critical inputs into:
Investment decisions for renewable energy and firming assets
Producing short and long-term energy market insights to guide portfolio management
The Senior Market Modelling Analyst will also contribute to broader energy market analytics and the development of commercial strategy to optimise revenue and manage portfolio risk. The role requires a combination of a curious and inquisitive attitude, analytical skills, energy market knowledge, and a collaborative approach to working with other teams.
The role sits within the Portfolio Analytics and Market Modelling (PAMM) team and reports to the Senior Manager of Market Modelling and Analytics. The PAMM team is responsible for developing market forecasts, measuring and monitoring energy market risk, optimising portfolio positions, developing trading and retail strategies with the Retail and Wholesale business units, and contributing to overall energy market strategy.
Responsibilities
Undertaking market modelling studies to develop Iberdrola Australia’s internal view on electricity prices, LGC prices, capacity and generation mix, and future market developments.
Contributing to implementing modelling improvements – for example how we model things like competitive behaviour, market volatility, constraints, weather outcomes, and policy impacts.
Making ongoing process improvements such as automating workflows and building data visualisation tools.
Critically engaging with modelling outcomes to formulate insights and effectively communicating these insights with teams across the business.
Modelling and optimising our energy market portfolio by assessing energy market revenue, risk, and uncertainty. Developing commercial strategies to manage short and long-term market risks
Monitoring relevant developments in energy market conditions including impacts of policy and regulatory changes as well as participant behaviour.
Required qualifications
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications in engineering, economics, mathematics, data science or a related discipline.
Skills
Strong interest in energy markets and desire to learn and produce insights
Quantitative and analytical skills, including managing, analysing and interpreting large electricity market data sets
Knowledge of the NEM including market settings, policy landscape, commercial strategies etc
Proficiency in programming using Python or other languages
Collaborative working style, with the ability to communicate complex work to less technical teams
Languages
- English (full professional competency)
Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
- Experience with PLEXOS or other energy market modelling software
Highly skilled at programming using Python or other languages
Experience working in an energy analyst role, particularly producing electricity market forecasts
