The primary role of Engineering function within Product Development team is to create specifications and designs for new products or improvements and enhancements to existing products. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for leading and delivering high-quality mechanical design solutions for medical devices and related systems. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy, influences technical direction, mentors other engineers, and ensures designs meet user needs, regulatory requirements, and business objectives. Works closely with customers, fellow engineers and other stakeholders to understand and define customer needs in these designs.

Let’s talk about Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional peers (systems, electronics, software, quality, manufacturing, suppliers) to define, develop, and deliver mechanical solutions that maximise value for ResMed and meet user and patient needs.

  • Own the development of complex mechanical components and sub-systems from concept through to production, including design definition, verification, and transfer to manufacturing.

  • Proactively communicate progress, technical risks, and mitigation strategies to peers, project leads, and stakeholders, demonstrating a strong solutions-focused mindset.

  • Take ownership of technical decisions within their scope, ensuring designs are robust, manufacturable, and aligned with system-level requirements.

  • Work effectively within a regulated medical device environment, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, design controls, risk management, and quality system requirements.

  • Apply and champion ResMed engineering best practices, processes, and tools, and contribute to their continuous improvement.

  • Mentor and support engineers through technical guidance, design reviews, and constructive feedback.

  • Take ownership of ongoing professional and technical development, maintaining depth in mechanical design while broadening system-level understanding.

Let’s talk about Core Competencies

Technical competency

  • Demonstrates strong mechanical engineering expertise, applying first principles, analytical methods, and simulation tools to solve complex product development problems.

  • Independently leads discipline-specific design tasks at component and sub-system level, with awareness of system-level impacts and trade-offs.

  • Applies a high level of attention to detail, particularly in DFM/DFA, GD&T, tolerancing, and material selection.

  • Collects, analyses, and interprets experimental and field data to support sound technical decision-making.

  • Communicates technical information clearly and effectively to peers, senior engineers, management, and suppliers using written, verbal, and graphical methods.

  • Builds clear, rational technical arguments and constructively challenges assumptions and design decisions across disciplines.

  • Learns from technical failures and applies insights to improve future designs and processes.

Leadership

  • Is proactive and autonomous in driving assigned work packages and design activities to completion

  • Takes accountability for outcomes, acknowledges mistakes, and actively incorporates feedback to improve results.

  • Identifies issues early, speaks up when risks or problems are observed, and proposes practical solutions.

  • Constructively challenges team decisions when appropriate, offering alternative solutions in a professional and proactive manner.

  • Provides technical leadership and mentorship to engineers.

Innovation

  • Proactively identifies opportunities to improve products, processes, and tools.

  • Demonstrates initiative in problem-solving, balancing independent thinking with timely escalation or collaboration when needed.

  • Embraces learning from mistakes and actively incorporates feedback into personal development and design approaches.

  • Comfortable asking questions, challenging the status quo, and exploring new ideas in a regulated environment.

Team Players

  • Demonstrates positive, respectful, and constructive behaviour in all team interactions.

  • Prioritises team and project outcomes

  • Collaborates effectively with local and global team members, suppliers, and manufacturing partners.

  • Demonstrates strong written communication skills appropriate for technical documentation and regulated design records.

Customer Obsessed

  • Maintains a strong focus on user, patient, and customer needs throughout the design process.

  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of ResMed’s products, business priorities, and quality expectations.

  • Understands requirements, risk, and the impact of design decisions on product safety, performance, and compliance.

Position-Specific Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in CAD tools and mechanical simulation/analysis tools used in product development.

  • Strong application of mechanical engineering principles and structured product development processes.

  • Experience contributing to or leading design verification, validation, and design transfer activities.

  • Familiarity with working in a regulated medical device environment

Qualifications and Experience
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechatronics, industrial design or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Several years of relevant mechanical design experience in product development.

  • Experience in medical devices or other regulated industries strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing technical leadership to other engineers.
