Power & Energy

SMEC is a global provider of engineering, environmental and construction services, consolidating all aspects of Energy and Renewables Infrastructure from planning to delivery. Our expertise includes grid connection studies, substation design, policy and sector planning, carbon services, load forecasting models, and long-term generation planning using simulation and dynamic programming techniques. We have delivered stand-alone and grid-tie photovoltaic and solar thermal projects, ‘water to wire’ services on mini and micro-hydro projects, geothermal power plants and generation facilities.

The Role

We’re seeking to engage an experienced Senior Project Manager for our Power & Energy Team. In this role you’ll be primarily responsible for the success of complex, high-priority projects; sourcing, developing, and maintaining relationships with clients, as well as providing effective management and guidance to employees and the project teams.

In addition to the above, you’ll manage the successful negotiation of commercial and financial outcomes resulting in engagement on large scale disciplinary projects and the successful delivery of the project’s outcomes from original concept to final implementation including quality, time, cost, and client relationships.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing input into business development proposals and assist in winning work through negotiation of commercial and legal conditions;
  • Developing repeat business within and across areas of responsibility through successful delivery of projects and anticipation of cross-functional solutions to other opportunities;
  • Involvement in the monitoring of client relationship health and discuss with the appropriate stakeholders;
  • Identifying and building relationships with target clients, executing new and creative solutions to meet client needs;
  • Managing and directing Project Managers and Engineers with systems, processes and resources;
  • Making recommendations for employee activities as required under the instrument of delegation;
  • Effectively managing project employees to achieve quality project deliverables in a timely manner
  • Strengthening the capability of the team through effective recruitment, retention and development activities;
  • Effectively leading the team to ensure team members have the necessary training, skills, workflow and procedures to be effective and productive to support business deliverables in line with the Strategic Business Plan;

About You

Suitable applicants will be/have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Engineering or Project Management qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience managing and directing major projects successfully to budget and client specifications;
  • Extensive project management and consulting skills, achieving prescribed budget, timeframe and client requirements;
  • High level communication skills to advise and guide complex project design development in a proactive manner and to represent SMEC as a valuable contributor to the project;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant design codes, Local Regulatory Authority Guidelines and Australian Standards;
  • Ability to identify the appropriate resourcing for projects;
  • Ability to identify requirements for skills development within the team;
