Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.
Where and how you can work
Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.
What you'd be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
QA Engineers' mission at Canva is to ensure that the team they're working with are always thinking about quality while working on their big goals. We believe quality is something that should be checked continuously throughout the process, not just at the end.
QA engineers at Canva are embedded in a product/platform group, generally with multiple teams, and work closely with product managers, designers and software engineers to ensure that we're delivering an exceptional experience to all our users. Some of the day to day tasks are improving or setting up different quality activities during the development cycle, using data to prioritise and advocate for issues, working with engineers to write unit, integration, and end to end tests, and identifying risks with product releases.
At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Being the main driver for improving quality across teams and working with key stakeholders to drive process, tooling, and testing changes.
  • Being responsible for creating the test strategy for the team's projects, with a focus on shift-left QA activities instead of just test execution.
  • Being the subject matter expert for the team's testing and product knowledge, driving knowledge sharing and documentation for your team and other teams' software engineers and QA
  • Modeling initiative and ownership in achieving goals, and improving processes and solutions for other QA engineers.
  • Working closely with other Senior QA engineers to define expectations and upskill other QA engineers.

You're probably a match if

  • You have experience working with both product and platform teams and defining the QA process for your team. This may involve looking at the current development process for each team, identifying opportunities for injecting quality, and advocating for process changes to improve product quality.
  • You have experience working with teams that design, build and deploy changes across an organization, influencing large teams, defining infra needs and getting buy-in.
  • You have experience working with engineers and have a solid understanding of rich/complex UIs.
  • It will be helpful to have FE and Mobile automation experience.
  • You have a good understanding of what needs to be included in unit, integration, and end-to-end tests and can coach engineers on what needs to be automated.
  • You are meticulous in your work and passionate about testing. You consider every possible scenario during your exploratory testing and can spot bugs that others might not notice.
  • You are a problem solver who is passionate about solving different types of bugs. You are comfortable with using various tools to find out the root causes of issues and have worked with Jira (or other bug reporting tool) to communicate bugs effectively with engineers, PMs, and designers.

A nice to have:

  • You can coach other engineers on quality assistance and testing.
  • You have automated trivial tasks using a scripting language like Bash or Python.
  • You have experience testing Mobile apps for iOS and Android.
  • You have experience testing Desktop apps for Windows and Mac.
  • You have experience with Accessibility testing.
  • You have experience with Offline support testing.
  • You have experience with marketing tools like Braze to test push notifications and in-app messages in mobile apps.
  • You have experience with observability tools like Sentry.io to track down issues.
  • You can query databases and reporting systems using SQL or similar to get data to support your bug reports.

About the team
The Device Platform subgroup's mission is to ensure a delightful and powerful experience for every user on every device. Capturing the full functionality of a complex design tool into smaller screens and building device-specific capabilities is a really interesting problem space with high scope and impact that can benefit users, particularly those from underprivileged situations. There are 2 main programs of work:

  • We own the architecture to adapt the Canva web experience and leverage native technologies to build the iOS, Android, and Desktop app products
  • We drive and champion technical, strategic, and organisational changes to best empower product teams to build for these app experiences and ensure all features are optimised across all devices

With both the technical and organisational elements, it's incredibly dynamic and immensely satisfying to think both deep and broad about some of Canva's biggest challenges and you'll work closely with driven leaders (engineers, designers, product managers, and another QA in the group) who care passionately about pushing the boundaries of the mobile and desktop experience.
