Cochlear’s mission is to help people hear and be heard. As the global leader in implantable hearing solutions, Cochlear is dedicated to helping people with moderate to profound hearing loss experience a world full of sound. We aim to transform the way people understand and treat hearing loss and innovate to connect people with future technologies. Our employees tell us that the number one reason they enjoy working for Cochlear is the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives. Learn and grow with us as we tackle the most complex challenges in helping more people to experience a lifetime of hearing.

  • Define and deliver end‑to‑end architectures for complex medical device systems

  • Act as senior technical authority across cross‑functional R&D teams

  • Drive architectural reuse, scalability and compliance across product families

The Opportunity

The Senior Systems Architect plays a key role in defining, realising and evolving Cochlear’s system architectures across complex medical device platforms. Working at the intersection of systems engineering, product development and future technology, you will lead architectural definition activities that span multiple components, products and engineering disciplines.

In this role, you will partner closely with system architects, product development teams, platform groups and research functions to ensure architectural decisions are integrated, scalable and aligned with Cochlear’s strategic direction. You will balance forward‑looking architectural vision with practical delivery and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead end‑to‑end system architecture definition and realisation across complex, multi‑component medical devices

  • Contribute to L1/L2 architecture definition, ensuring alignment across product families and platforms

  • Define and communicate architectural roadmaps, objectives and milestones in collaboration with cross‑functional stakeholders

  • Resolve complex architectural challenges spanning multiple engineering domains, making sound decisions in ambiguous environments

  • Ensure architectures meet regulatory, safety and quality requirements throughout definition and delivery

  • Promote systems thinking and architectural best practices across R&D organisations

  • Apply product family engineering principles to maximise reuse, reduce complexity and improve scalability

  • Use MBSE techniques (e.g. SysML) to document, model and communicate architectural intent

  • Mentor and guide engineers, architects and SMEs through technical leadership and work‑package ownership

About You.

As we grow our operations, we are looking for people who share our passion delivering safe, effective, and high-quality hearing solutions. To add value to Cochlear in this role, you'll be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Proven experience defining and delivering system architectures for complex products, ideally in regulated environments

  • Strong grounding in systems engineering and architectural principles including decomposition, interfaces and integration

  • Experience working within medical device regulatory and standards frameworks

  • Understanding of Product Family Engineering principles and architectural reuse strategies

  • Experience applying or contributing to model‑based systems engineering approaches (MBSE, SysML or similar)

  • Strong technical judgement, with the ability to make decisions across domains in ambiguous situations

  • Clear and effective communication skills, able to influence diverse technical and senior stakeholders

What Would Make You Stand Out

Experience advancing architectural practices or global consistency across multiple product lines or contributing to IP development through innovative system concepts and architectural solutions.

Why this role is for you?

This role offers the opportunity to operate as a senior technical influencer without stepping away from hands‑on architectural impact. You’ll help shape how complex systems come together, strengthen architectural maturity across the organisation, and contribute directly to technologies that improve hearing outcomes worldwide.
