The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to work in a dynamic team. You will be supporting the Battlespace Communication System (BCS) Program. BCS is a next generation networking product that is the centerpiece for multiple projects and campaigns. The BCS combines both developmental and off the shelf hardware and software to provide world leading communications capability for ADF personnel. It can be rapidly deployed from anywhere, and its modular design provides a flexible, scalable solution that can be customized for various mission needs.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and integrate defence hardware, firmware, and software subsystems while embedding product-security controls throughout the full lifecycle (requirements, design, build, test, production, operations, support) in partnership with Integrated Product Teams (IPTs)
  • Lead security authorization and compliance assessments for mission-critical systems, ensuring alignment with defence standards (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001, IEC 62443)
  • Advise stakeholders on maintaining product security and authorisation, including the implications of product modifications.
  • Create and maintain security policies, procedures, audits, and assessments.
  • Conduct threat modelling on defence equipment architectures to identify potential cyber threats and vulnerabilities, to support prioritisation and mitigation of risks for systems and services.
  • Analyze and determine the risk associated with potential vulnerabilities for different operational contexts, providing recommendations for mitigation.
  • Provide inputs for planning, scheduling, and risk, issues, opportunity activities for cyber security in BCS projects/campaigns.
  • Participate in the evaluation of engineering and security processes, recommend improvements, and champion secure-by-design practices across the product development pipeline
  • Communicate and collaborate with a team in a conscientious and inclusive way.

About You
  • Tertiary degree qualification in an engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Experience within Defence or complex engineering project environments.
  • Experience with the authorisation processes for Australian government (Defence) systems and developing associated authorisation document packs.
  • Familiarity with the Australian Defence security framework, including associated policies and procedures, and an understanding of the Australian Cyber Security Centre Information Security Manual.
  • Understanding of product and cyber security practices development and implementation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey security concepts to various audiences.
  • Experience with security risk management methodologies and processes.
  • A desire to work as part of a dynamic team supporting a range of technology
