Job Description

The Senior Tax Analyst role is responsible for:

  • Assisting the team in the month end activities for the life and non-Life business units with a focus on indirect taxes.
  • Completing tax reconciliations and processes for senior tax personnel. This will involve working closely with the Treasury & Reconciliations Manager to resolve outstanding reconciling items.
  • Monthly GL reviews of tax sensitive accounts for the non-life business which will aid in the annual compliance activities for the TDA Group.
  • Assistance may be required in the preparation of the TAL Consolidated Tax Return, especially in the non-life business units.
  • Understanding the PAYG processes for the life business units and to provide support to the tax function for an alignment of processes where practical and assisting the other Senior Tax Analyst where required.
  • Ensure that tax documentation to support tax processes is accurate, complete and annually reviewed to satisfy TAL’s governance processes as well as ATO requirements.
  • Assist and provide support in the year end audit activities across all business units for direct tax matters.
  • Undertake controls testing for direct tax activities on behalf of the tax team and ensure that these are completed on time in accordance with the TAL Risk Management Framework.
  • Assist the Senior Tax Manager with Group Schemes where TAL acts as an Administrator for the scheme.

A key priority for this role is to build upon our compliance processes with a view to allowing Senior staff to work on TAL’s strategic priorities.

You are accountable for:

  • Preparing tax calculations for review by senior team members.
  • Preparing the compliance returns in the indirect space for review by senior tax team members. This will include preparing necessary documentation to support the positions adopted.
  • Working with the tax team to ensure TAL remains compliant for tax purposes at all times. This includes ensuring that lodgements and payments are made on time, and in line with the tax lodgment program.
  • Providing support to the tax team to allow for the accurate, complete and correct tax advice (written and verbal) to key stakeholders including, but not limited to the Head of Tax, projects, Claims, Operations, Financial Control on a timely basis as required.
  • Ensuring that all reconciliations are carried out and that any discrepancies are investigated, explained and resolved. Where this is not feasible, escalate any concerns with Senior tax personnel.
  • Working as part of a unified tax team is critical for success in this role. Team members must be able to support other team members as necessary.
  • Annual review of tax standard operating procedures and updating these where required for tax matters. This is a critical process that aids in ensuring TAL’s tax risk governance across direct taxes.
  • Managing tax risk and ensuring controls are tested each year and will include raising risks and incidents where appropriate.
  • Testing tax controls in accordance with TAL’s risk management framework. Any issues will be raised and documented as appropriate.
  • Assistance as required in year end audit activities with TAL’s auditors.
  • Assistance with any Regulatory reviews by the ATO or State Revenue authorities as relevant.
  • Ensuring that a high standard of tax services is provided to the business and other stakeholders
  • Working with the business on any rate changes that are announced due to legislative changes or through the Federal Budget process.

Qualifications

  • Attention to detail and the desire to “do the right thing”
  • Qualifications in tax / accounting
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a similar role advising on Australian tax matters, preferably in relation to financial services businesses.
  • Knowledge and experience of income tax as it applies to life insurance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to form relationships with key stakeholders
  • Ability to work in a team environment and work autonomously ensure goals are met
  • Strong tax compliance skills
  • Ability and willingness to learn new skills
