Department Overview
The Product Engineering area is responsible for designing, writing, testing and deploying the code for our software products at Motorola Solutions. The area consists of front-end only developers, backend-only developers, full-stack developers, test automation developers, and quality analysts. Developers and analysts are grouped in to sprint teams of about 5 people, which focus on different aspects of the product. We run an Agile methodology and have adopted best practice processes and frameworks to ensure that the product is high-performing, secure and scalable.
Job Description

In this role you will:

  • Analyse and plan improvements to Motorola Solutions’ products and services, including producing technical designs, estimating effort, test planning, and deployment sequencing.
  • Implement and ship improvements to Motorola Solutions’ products and services, complying with Motorola Solutions’ development standards, procedures, requirements, and timelines for each task.
  • Apply testing strategies to ensure that Motorola Solutions’ products and services functionally and non-functionally meet customer expectations.
  • Provide technical advice to Engineering Management, other Team Leads, other areas of the business, and to customers as needed; including attending meetings to provide a technical perspective or providing reports and/or documentation.
  • Assist other teams with their duties when necessary.
  • Monitor the health and reliability of our products and services, and resolve operational issues and activities as they arise.
  • Maintain details of progress, time spent, and status of work within the issue tracking system.
  • Document products, services, and processes to a level appreciated by another engineer in a similar role who may not have the detailed knowledge of the product or service.
  • Update job knowledge by keeping up to date with industry trends and ideas, studying development tools and programming techniques, and reading professional publications.
  • Read and contribute to functional and technical specifications where applicable.
  • Continuously contribute to improving our software engineering process, including estimation, design, quality assurance, security, efficiency, and innovation techniques.
  • Engage, contribute, and be involved in technology chapter meetings
  • Responsible for coaching the lower-level engineers in their team by sharing knowledge and contributing to a safe and inclusive environment.

Your Key Working Relationships

  • Engineering Management: Take direction on software engineering techniques, priorities, and strategies from Engineering Management. Provide feedback to Engineering Management on technical options and recommendations.
  • Product Management: Work with Product Management on the design of product and services and provide them with technical advice and options.
  • Software Engineers: Assist, engage, and share knowledge with other Software Engineers in the team, in other teams, and across the business.
  • Quality: Work with Quality Analysts, Quality Engineers, and Quality Management to test the products and services you work on.

Basic Requirements
  • Tertiary degree in software development (or similar) or at least 6 years commercial (paid) software engineering experience
  • 5+ years commercial experience in developing in Angular and NodeJS (both Typescript).
  • A good working knowledge of web-related technologies and protocols
  • A good understanding of web application security risks and controls
  • Experience in writing unit tests in both Angular and NodeJS
  • Experience with AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, and S3
