Job Description

Reporting to the Sport Editor, this 10-month contract opportunity is an exciting role for a dynamic, multi-skilled journalist eager to lead the coverage of fast-paced sporting events. You will play a crucial role in delivering high-impact breaking news, sharp analysis and compelling features for The Sydney Morning Herald’s digital and print platforms. Bringing authority and an extensive source network to your reporting, you will thrive on setting the sports agenda.

Day-to-day you will:

  • Drive fast, accurate breaking news coverage across key sporting codes for digital and print platforms.

  • Generate unique story ideas, follow up developments and react swiftly to daily news cycles.

  • Cultivate and maintain an extensive network of contacts and sources across the sporting community.

  • Produce exclusive news reports, analytical pieces and feature stories to tight deadlines.

  • Deliver original video content and adapt reporting to suit diverse audience formats.

  • Uphold strict standards of accuracy, balance, media law and editorial ethics across all published copy.

  • Collaborate closely with newsroom colleagues.

What you'll bring:

  • Prior sport reporting experience with a strong track record of breaking news. 

  • First-rate news judgment and the agility to respond instantly to developing stories.

  • Deep knowledge of major sporting codes, industry trends and key stakeholders.

  • An established network of reliable contacts and trusted industry sources.

  • Outstanding written communication skills with the ability to create engaging video content.

  • Exceptional time management skills to balance breaking news priorities with longer-term projects.

  • A collaborative mindset with a strong commitment to quality, fair and inclusive journalism.
