About PagerDuty

The Web Evolution team is a high-impact group within the Ops Cloud Platform organization, chartered to lead this transformation and empower teams to confidently own and evolve their domains.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ruby on Rails Leadership: Serve as the organization’s foremost expert in Ruby on Rails, bringing the latest best practices, patterns, and innovations to our core web platform.
  • Architectural Strategy: Define and drive the technical architecture for our web platform, focusing on modularity, scalability, and maintainability using modern Rails patterns and tools.
  • Modernization & Innovation: Identify opportunities to evolve our platform architecture, leveraging the latest Rails features, gems, and community standards to improve developer experience and system performance.
  • Collaboration & Enablement: Partner closely with domain teams to understand their needs, provide technical guidance, and ensure seamless integration of new features and improvements.
  • Best Practices & Standards: Establish and promote guidelines for high-quality, maintainable Rails code, automated testing, and CI/CD.
  • Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Mentor engineers across the organization, lead technical discussions, and create training materials to elevate Rails expertise company-wide.
  • Communication & Influence: Act as a key liaison between platform and domain teams, facilitating clear communication, driving consensus, and ensuring alignment on technical direction.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current with the Ruby on Rails ecosystem, proactively introducing new tools, techniques, and patterns to keep our platform at the forefront of modern web development.
Basic Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience building and architecting large-scale web applications with Ruby on Rails.
  • Deep, up-to-date expertise in Ruby on Rails, including the latest features, patterns, and best practices.
  • Proven track record of leading technical transformations or platform modernization in production environments.
  • Experience with modularization, service boundaries, and evolving complex Rails systems.
  • Significant experience designing, building, testing, and operating distributed systems in a SaaS environment, with a focus on scalability, reliability, and performance. 
  • Experience with technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, Kafka, Redis, MySQL, and modern observability and CI/CD tooling.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively across multiple engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and influence engineers at all levels.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a technical leader or architect on platform or infrastructure teams, especially in high-growth SaaS environments.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and modern Rails ecosystem gems.
  • Strong understanding of domain-driven design and strategies for incremental modernization.
  • Track record of enabling and supporting shared code ownership models.
  • Passion for building maintainable, scalable systems and empowering teams to move fast with confidence.

This role is expected to come into our Toronto office 1 day per month, so you can thrive in your new role and fully embrace being a Dutonian!

The base salary range for this position is 157,000 - 238,000 CAD. This role may also be eligible for bonus, commission, equity, and/or benefits.

Our base salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range, which is subject to change based on primary work location, reflects the minimum and maximum base salary we expect to pay newly hired employees for the position. Within the range, we determine pay for an individual based on a number of factors including market location, job-related knowledge, skills/competencies and experience.
