Do work that matters

At CommBank, we're building the future of customer channels and data-led experiences for Australian businesses.

We're investing heavily in the next generation of customer channel, data and AI-enabled platforms that simplify how customers and colleagues engage with the bank. Our teams are creating modern, scalable technology that helps customers access insights, complete critical banking journeys and connect with the right banking services more easily.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll join one of several engineering crews across our Customer Channel & Data domain. Depending on your experience and interests, you may contribute to customer-facing channels, banker and CRM experiences, data-driven services, AI-enabled engagement platforms or core platform capabilities. You'll help shape products used across Business Banking while influencing engineering direction across a rapidly growing technology organisation.

This is an opportunity to work on platforms undergoing significant transformation, modernising how customer and colleague experiences are delivered through contemporary cloud, data and software engineering practices.

Business Banking Technology executes the Technology Strategy across Business Banking through the world-leading application of technology and operations. We partner closely with the business to solve real-world problems using data and AI-driven insights, resilient platforms and modern engineering practices, delivering customer value at speed and scale.

You'll join a growing engineering organisation responsible for critical capabilities including:

  • Customer and colleague digital experiences
  • CRM and banker platform capabilities
  • Data-driven insights and decisioning services
  • AI-enabled customer engagement experiences
  • Shared platform services supporting Business Banking journeys

Working closely with engineers, product managers, architects, data specialists and business stakeholders, you'll help solve complex technical challenges while mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering excellence across the domain.

What you'll do

  • Lead the design and delivery of scalable, resilient software solutions across customer channel and data platforms.
  • Build and evolve applications, APIs, services and platform capabilities that support critical Business Banking experiences.
  • Contribute across the technology stack, including backend services, cloud platforms, customer experiences and data-enabled solutions.
  • Drive architectural decisions and influence engineering direction within and across squads.
  • Champion modern software engineering practices including automated testing, CI/CD, observability and DevSecOps.
  • Partner closely with product, business and architecture stakeholders to deliver meaningful customer outcomes.
  • Mentor engineers and help grow technical capability across the broader organisation.
  • Support platforms in production and drive continuous improvement through automation, monitoring and operational excellence.

We're interested in hearing from people who have

  • Proven experience designing and delivering complex software solutions within large-scale or distributed environments.
  • Strong hands-on software engineering capability and a passion for solving challenging technical problems.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications, APIs, platforms or data-driven services.
  • The ability to balance strategic technical thinking with hands-on delivery.
  • Experience influencing technical direction, architecture and engineering standards.
  • A track record of mentoring engineers and uplifting capability across teams.

Experience in customer channels, digital platforms, CRM, data services, AI-enabled products or financial services is highly regarded, but not essential. We're looking for exceptional engineers who can learn quickly, apply sound judgement and make an impact across a variety of product areas.

Technical skills

We value strong engineering fundamentals over expertise in any single language or framework. Our teams use a range of technologies across customer channels, platform services, data and AI-enabled experiences. Experience with some of the following will help you succeed.
