As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the design and technical strategy for the Group’s flagship Merchant Modernisation Project, delivering full-stack solutions with a strong focus on front-end development using Next.js or React, while also running the backend services built using .NET and .NET Core.

The CBA technology unit delivers the best digital banking services to Commonwealth Bank customers and to do so is responsible for digital delivery, group data and analytics, technology and technology infrastructure, cyber, fraud, physical security and business resilience for all divisions across CBA. It is also dedicated to delivering the best workplace technology experience for our over 53.000 people across CBA and focused on providing the latest tools, technology, and resources to enhance the way we work together and empower our people to achieve more for our customers.

This role will see you join the Merchants Technology Crew, within the Everyday Banking Practice, which integrates people, processes, and platforms to support critical payment services—including cheques, bulk electronic payments, merchant acquiring (with terminal tech), and high-value international transactions. The team underpins 40% of Australia’s economy, enabling over $90 billion in daily transactions through reliable, scalable systems that power nearly every customer-facing channel at CBA.

We’re interested in hearing from people who: 

  • Have the ability to provide full stack, full cycle design solutions with a key focus on front-end engineering e.g Next.js and/or React.

  • Provide experience as a full stack, full cycle engineer supporting back-end development solutions as needed e.g C# .NET Core.

  • Have strong front-end technical skills while being able to understand backend API’s.

  • Act and lead as the technical subject-matter expert for all engineers, sharing your knowledge and expertise to your chapter via workshops and guilds.

  • Can design innovative solutions to solve complicated problems as part of a cross-functional squad.

  • Work with a true DevSecOps mindset and approach. You build it, you secure it, you test it, and you run it.

  • Ensure our technical approach is sound, fit for purpose, and well architected.

Tech skills

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to possess knowledge of all, but experience or exposure with some, or their equivalents, will set you up for success in this team:

  • Expert in SDLC and Agile methods with broader experience around architecture, design, implementation, deployment, integration, and technology transformations.

  • Development Methodologies: MVC with .NET Core and .NET Framework, REST APIs, Microservices, streaming platforms like Kafka essential.

  • Front End: Experience in Next.js and/or React highly regarded.

  • Back end: Proficient in .NET Core, C# essential.

  • Cloud platforms: AWS services (EC2, ECS, Cloud formation, Lambda, S3, Secrets Manager, KMS, IAM services etc.). 

  • DevSecOps: CI/CD tools (e.g. GitHub Actions, Jenkins, TeamCity, Synk, Sonarqube, Octopus).

  • Network: – Firewall, network segmentation, Infrastructure as code, API gateways.

  • IaC: Cloud formation.

  • Containerisation: Docker, Kubernetes - building, deploying and managing containerised applications.

  • Hands-on experience with AI technologies—such as coding agents and automation—is highly desirable, though a strong technical mindset and willingness to adopt AI in daily workflows is equally valued.
