As a Staff Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Engineering at CommBank, championing cutting-edge solutions and fostering innovation that drives real-world impact. Your technical expertise and leadership will guide the team in addressing complex challenges while ensuring scalability, security, and reliability in all deliverables.

While the Payment Domain is part of the Business Banking unit, its reach extends to every part of the Bank. The team consists of engineers and technology leaders with a diverse set of skills to support this transformation. The team is also responsible for driving Engineering Governance, Continuous Delivery, and key technological simplification initiatives such as Cloud and Payments Event-based architecture.
As a Staff Engineer, you'll be a key team member of the Payment as a Service (PaaS) customer onboarding squad, working on improving the customer onbaording journey. You'll design solutions for complex challenges with a strong focus on security from the first line of code. You'll also encourage others to enhance their engineering skills while building top-tier applications.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
- Have experience decomposing monoliths, Or experience of building microservices at scale, Or experience of building data intensive APIs, Or experience of building event driven applications.
- Have real world experience of operating microservices in the DevSecOps model.
- Have real world experience of addressing Tech Debt using a commercially focused and pragmatic approach.
- Have real world experience of building high performing Engineering teams and upskilling lower performing teams.
- Identifies, gains support and ensures execution of technical direction and strategy for the business.
- Designs and implements solutions to complex problems, including onboarding and migrating to new tooling as well as removing obsolete systems and code.
- Encourages risk-taking and constructively challenges the status quo while influencing stakeholders and building diverse and inclusive teams.
We are looking for people with:
- Application development experience using a modern language such as TypeScript/Java and REST APIs.
- Serverless Computing using AWS (AWS lambda, API gateway, IAM Roles & Policy, SQS, SNS, Dynamo).
- NodeJS based backend application development experience with TypeScript.
- Sound knowledge of OAuth2 and mTLS.
- Infrastructure as code using AWS CDK/Terraform/CloudFormation/SST.
- Experienced in working in a DevOps environment and contributing to the CI-CD pipeline.
- Microservices architecture, Design Patterns and best practices in software programming.
- Working knowledge on Pub-Sub and Streaming technologies such as SQS, SNS, Kafka and Kinesis.
- Monitoring and logging tools such as Splunk, CloudWatch.
- Experienced in performance tuning while building high throughput and resilient applications.
- SDLC with Agile methodology.
- A degree in Computer Science or a related field.
Highly desirable:
- Banking and Payments domain knowledge.
- Fargate and EKS. Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes.
