About Maincode

Maincode is an AI research and engineering company. We build Matilda, Australia's large language model, trained, served and deployed here in Melbourne. We run our own GPUs in local data centres and we build everything above them: the racks, the training and serving systems, and the products that run on them.

About the Role

The hardest problem at Maincode is not the tech. It is finding the small number of people who can build a frontier AI company. We are a small team with a high bar, and we treat this as an engineering problem.

Your job is the technical screen. You will run the vetting stage for engineering candidates: conversations built on technical fundamentals, testing what each candidate claims to know. You will also build the systems the pipeline runs on: screening tooling, dashboards, and the automation that turns hundreds of applications a week into a small number of good decisions.

You do not need recruiting experience. You need technical fluency, precision with language, and genuine curiosity about people.

What You'll Do

  • Screen engineering candidates and produce the reads the team hires from; automated and built into systems you design.

  • Design and build talent systems and tooling.

  • Work day to day with our talent and engineering teams.

  • Calibrate with the engineers who run the later rounds.

You Might Be a Fit If

  • You studied computer science or have equivalent experience. You can judge an answer about fundamentals.

  • You are interested in both people and tech.

  • You can code (by hand) well enough to build real tools, but you do not want production engineering to be your job.

  • You are warm and you are exact.

What you need to know about the Sydney Tech Scene

From opera to comedy shows, the Sydney Opera House hosts more than 1,600 performances a year, yet its entertainment sector isn't the only one taking center stage. The city's tech sector has earned a reputation as one of the fastest-growing in the region. More specifically, its IT sector stands out as the country's third-largest, growing at twice the rate of overall employment in the past decade as businesses continue to digitize their operations to stay competitive.
