Company Description
Nine is Australia’s largest locally owned media company. Working at Nine, you’ll have access to a unique range of experiences and opportunities, helping drive the success of the country’s most trusted television, radio, digital and publishing brands.
Our content reaches almost every Australian - meaning what we do has real impact. We bring people together, celebrate the big moments, and capture the everyday ones.
Some of our most beloved brands have been part of Australian life for generations, and others - new on the scene - have already found their place firmly in our lives. We’re evolving and we need people like you to bring new ideas, innovate and make your mark.

Job Description

The Digital Archive team at Nine is embarking on a once-in-a-generation project to digitise and productise our unmatched content archive, representing 195 years of Australian broadcast media, film, and publications.

This is a unique opportunity to shape a lasting social and historical legacy for Australia.

As our Technical Lead you will lead the foundational design of a new suite of AI-powered products. These innovations will make our rich history accessible to internal creators and new external markets, unlocking diversified revenue streams for Nine.

In this hybrid technical leadership and full-stack engineering role, you will act as the key technical decision-maker for the team. You won't just delegate tasks or manage infrastructure from afar- you will define the technical roadmap, make critical architectural choices, and write the code that powers them alongside the engineering group.

This is a 12-month contract.

What you’ll do:

  • Architecture & Hands-On Code: Act as the primary technical architect owning end-to-end solution design while actively contributing as a hands-on full-stack engineer.
  • Scalable Systems: Design, develop, and maintain secure, high-availability applications, supporting cloud-native infrastructure, and data pipelines.
  • Engineering Standards: Establish and champion modern engineering practices, standardise CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and mentor engineers to elevate technical output.
  • Operations & Integrations: Oversee system maintenance, act as the escalation point for complex challenges, and lead technical engagements and secure data integrations with third-party vendors.
  • Stakeholder Alignment: Lead cross-team technical collaborations within the platform engineering group and influence stakeholders across the broader organisation.
  • Roadmaps & Delivery: Drive project planning and technical roadmaps, managing team workflows, objectives, and execution in Jira.
  • Technical Vision: Effectively communicate complex architectural trade-offs and technical visions across all levels of a large organisation.
  • Documentation & Reliability: Architect clear documentation standards for software designs and workflows, and coordinate on-call rotations to ensure operational excellence and incident readiness.

What You'll Bring

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including demonstrated technical leadership.
  • Proven experience architecting and delivering high-volume, large-scale systems within enterprise compliance and security frameworks.
  • Hands-on proficiency with modern languages and frameworks such as Go, JavaScript, React, Python, and Bash.
  • Deep familiarity with AWS and/or GCP services across compute, storage, networking, and security (relevant cloud certifications are highly regarded).
  • Expertise in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and automated CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, TeamCity, GitLab CI).
  • Practical experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and containerisation tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Solid understanding of core networking protocols and monitoring/logging stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills paired with a demonstrable record of strong collaboration across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
