Job Description

This role ensures TAL’s digital underwriting approach aligns with product and pricing strategies while improving the overall customer experience. The position collaborates closely with the Underwriting Policy, Governance and Quality team, as well as the Continuous Delivery team, to design and implement underwriting improvements, maintaining strong feedback from claims.

As part of the Portfolio Management team, the role contributes to delivering a high-quality digital underwriting experience across Retail, Direct, and Group offerings, while upholding TAL’s risk philosophy and profitability through robust underwriting standards.

In This Role You Will

  • Lead the design and ongoing improvement of underwriting journeys across Retail, Direct, and Group channels
  • Identify and address customer friction points using journey mapping, feedback analysis, and usability testing

  • Design and configure underwriting rules in URE (MRAS Rules Designer) to enhance straight-through processing while staying within TAL’s risk appetite

  • Collaborate with technology teams and vendors to develop and deploy platform enhancements, including participation in sprint planning and UAT

  • Analyse data from multiple sources - such as claims, underwriting decisions, URE performance, customer feedback, journey analytics, adviser behaviour, and ML outputs, to identify improvement opportunities

  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with cross-functional teams, including Underwriting, Risk, Technology, Distribution, Claims, and Operations

  • Collaborate with the Head of Portfolio Management to develop and advance TAL’s underwriting automation roadmap and strategic priorities

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in Life Insurance underwriting

  • Strong understanding of the life insurance industry and business operations

  • Experience in agile and waterfall environments, including requirements gathering, user story creation, and UAT coordination

  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, with a track record of driving outcomes across cross-functional teams (Underwriting, Risk, Technology, Distribution)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; report writing experience desirable

  • Experience designing URE rules using MRAS Rules Designer or similar; proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
