Who are we looking for?

GHD is seeking an experienced Urban Planner to join our Planning and Approvals team in Sydney, playing a key role in delivering high‑quality statutory and strategic planning outcomes across urban and regional New South Wales.

This is an exciting opportunity for a planner with a consulting mindset who is motivated by complex, large‑scale and city‑shaping projects. This role would suit someone who wants to work at the intersection of planning, design, infrastructure and delivery, while helping to grow and strengthen a high‑performing planning service within a leading multidisciplinary consultancy.

Working alongside our technical directors, designers and specialist teams, you will help shape precincts, communities and infrastructure outcomes across NSW, leveraging GHD’s established client relationships and deep technical capability across transport, water, energy, property, environment and social infrastructure.

This role offers genuine variety, from rezoning and statutory approvals to strategic planning, precinct master planning and policy work.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Contributing to and leading statutory and strategic planning projects across NSW, with a strong focus on precinct‑scale, regional and city‑shaping initiatives
  • Acting as a trusted advisor to public and private sector clients, providing clear, pragmatic planning advice within complex regulatory and delivery environments
  • Working closely with urban designers, engineers, environmental specialists and economists to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary planning and design outcomes
  • Supporting the growth of GHD’s planning and approvals offering, identifying opportunities, leveraging existing clients, and helping shape future work pipelines
  • Playing an active role in project management, coordinating inputs across disciplines and ensuring high‑quality, timely delivery
  • Maintaining strong relationships with regulators, government agencies, councils and key stakeholders
  • Take on increasing levels of client leadership and business development responsibility, aligned with your experience and career goals

What you will bring to the team:

  • A degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning or a related discipline
  • 5–10+ years’ experience in a consulting and/or government planning role
  • A strong working knowledge of NSW planning legislation, approvals pathways and rezoning processes
  • Experience contributing to or managing complex, multidisciplinary projects, including precincts, master planning, infrastructure or state‑significant projects
  • Sound project management skills, with the ability to balance technical, commercial and stakeholder considerations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging clients, regulators and project partners
  • An interest in growing a rewarding planning practice, building client relationships and working across GHD’s broader market sectors
