About Mastercard Payment Gateway Services
Mastercard Gateway is the engine behind digital payments for some of the world's largest merchants, acquirers, and payment service providers. We process over 7 billion transactions annually across 255+ acquiring connections in 160+ countries, powering ecommerce, in-app, mobile, and in-store payments through a single, secure platform.
Our product teams don't just maintain infrastructure - they shape how the world pays. From reducing decline rates and optimising approval performance, to securing every card-on-file transaction with network tokenisation, to authenticating payments with passkeys and 3D Secure - every product decision directly impacts the merchants and consumers who depend on us.
We're looking for people who are curious, confident, and opinionated - not afraid to push their agenda when it serves our customers. People who communicate with clarity, lead with common sense, and use AI as a native tool in how they think and work
Make an Impact as an Associate Product Manager
As an Associate Product Manager, you'll work alongside experienced product managers, engineers, solution architects, and commercial teams to bring payment capabilities to market for a global customer base. You won't be watching from the sidelines - you'll be in the room, shaping decisions and owning outcomes
In your first year, you will:• Launch features to market - own go-to-market plans for new product capabilities, from defining success criteria and building launch collateral through to tracking adoption and iterating based on customer feedback.• Work cross-functionally - collaborate with engineering, solution architecture, regional product delivery, commercialisation, and customer success teams in a matrixed, global organisation.• Get close to customers - understand merchant and acquirer pain points, translate them into product insights, and advocate for solutions that deliver measurable value.• Measure what matters - define and track OKRs, monitor product KPIs (approval rates, tokenisation penetration, authentication success rates), and propose optimisation strategies.• Use AI to accelerate your work - leverage AI tools to automate analysis, synthesise customer feedback, draft documentation, and enhance team productivity.
As you grow, you will:
• Own a product area end-to-end - take full lifecycle responsibility for a capability within
your track: framing the problem, defining requirements, prioritising the backlog,
partnering with engineering on delivery, and driving commercialisation.• Gain technical depth - develop a working understanding of payment processing flows, API design, scheme protocols, and platform architecture so you can confidently discuss solution trade-offs with engineering.• Contribute to product strategy - participate in roadmap planning, competitive
analysis, and Studio product lifecycle processes (Concept → Prototype → Market Test → Commercialise).
What We're Looking For
We recruit for and value the following - adapted for early-career professionals who are ready to make an outsized impact:
• Curiosity & Conviction You ask "why" relentlessly and form your own point of view. You're not afraid to challenge assumptions - including those of people more senior than you - when you believe it serves the customer. You seek out complexity rather than shying away from it.• Communication & Common Sense You can explain a technical payment flow to a business stakeholder and articulate a commercial value proposition to an engineer - with equal clarity. You write well, present confidently, and know when to be concise versus when to go deep. You have the judgement to know what matters.• AI Native You don't just use AI - you think with it. You've built something with AI on your own: a side project, a tool, a website, an automation. You see AI as a force multiplier for how product teams work - from customer research and data analysis to documentation and stakeholder communication. You'll be expected to bring this mindset to the team from day one.• Bias for Action You'd rather ship and learn than wait for perfect information. You take initiative, seek responsibility, and deliver results - not just analysis. You're energised by the pace of a product team that launches capabilities used by hundreds of thousands of merchants globally.• Collaborative but Independent You value building long-term partnerships with colleagues, but you can work autonomously, manage ambiguity, and drive outcomes without constant direction. You thrive in a matrix organisation where influence matters more than authority.• Customer Empathy Natural empathy for customers shapes how you think about building and launching products. You instinctively put yourself in the shoes of merchants, acquirers, and consumers - and you're motivated by solving their real problems, not just shipping features.• Analytical Rigour You're comfortable with data - transaction volumes, approval rates, conversion metrics, revenue impact. You don't need to be a data scientist, but you should be able to interrogate a dataset, spot patterns, and turn numbers into actionable product decisions.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or Master's students graduating between July 2026 - Feb 2027
- Able to start work on 1 Feb 2027 (Start Dates are fixed)
- Demonstrated interest in payments, fintech, digital commerce, or platform technology
- Evidence of building something with AI (personal project, hackathon, startup, tool, or workflow automation)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Analytical mindset with comfort in working with data
Visa Sponsorship: Mastercard Australia cannot sponsor intern and full-time employment visas, and only candidates who possess full legal working rights in Australia will be considered (PRs & Citizens of AUS/NZ only).
Why Mastercard Gateway?• Real impact from day one - you'll work on products used by 500,000+ merchant profiles across 160+ countries.• Technical depth meets commercial breadth - you'll learn how payment systems actually work, from API calls to scheme protocols to settlement flows, while also understanding the commercial dynamics that drive product decisions.• Mentorship and growth - you'll be supported by experienced product leaders across Processing, Digital, and Authentication domains, with structured development and organic learning opportunities.• Shape the future of payments - from agentic commerce and passkeys to payment optimisation and network tokenisation, you'll work on the technologies that are redefining how the world pays
