Job Description: Accountant
Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Accountant to manage the company’s financial records, reporting, and compliance obligations. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing financial statements, managing general ledger activities, reconciling accounts, assisting with budgeting and forecasting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and tax regulations.
The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting knowledge, excellent analytical skills, and experience working with cloud-based accounting systems such as Xero. Experience within construction, engineering, or professional services industries is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting
● Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
● Generate management reports, including:
○ Profit & Loss Statements
○ Balance Sheets
○ Cash Flow Statements
○ Budget vs Actual Reports
● Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
● Ensure financial records are accurate and up to date.
General Ledger & Reconciliations
● Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
● Perform bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.
● Investigate and resolve discrepancies in financial records.
● Ensure all journal entries are properly documented and approved.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
● Review and process supplier invoices and payment runs.
● Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding customer balances.
● Reconcile supplier and customer statements.
● Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions.
Budgeting & Forecasting
● Assist with preparing annual budgets and financial forecasts.
● Monitor financial performance against budget.
● Analyze variances and provide recommendations to management.
● Support cash flow forecasting and working capital management.
Tax & Compliance
● Prepare and lodge BAS/GST, payroll tax, and other statutory returns (as applicable).
● Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax legislation, and company policies.
● Assist with external audits and provide supporting documentation.
● Liaise with external accountants, auditors, and regulatory authorities.
Payroll Support
● Assist with payroll processing and payroll reconciliations.
● Maintain employee payroll records and leave balances.
● Ensure payroll compliance with relevant legislation.
Financial Analysis & Business Support
● Analyze financial data and provide insights to support business decisions.
● Monitor project costs, profitability, and operational performance.
● Assist management with financial modelling and reporting requirements.
● Support continuous improvement of financial processes and controls.
Required Qualifications
● Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience.
● Strong understanding of financial reporting and accounting principles.
● Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
● CPA, CA, or equivalent professional qualification (or working towards certification).
● Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
● High attention to detail and accuracy.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience in refrigeration airconditioning and electrical , construction and trade (good to have but not a hard requirement)
● Experience with accounting and job costing.
● Familiarity with Australian accounting standards and tax requirements (hard requirement)
● Experience working with cloud-based accounting platforms.
