The Role 🥳

Relevance AI is looking for a Controller to help build and scale our accounting function in Sydney. This is a high-impact role focused on owning core accounting operations, strengthening financial processes, and creating the structure needed to support a fast-growing, international business. You will play a key role in helping the team move beyond manual administrative work by improving the month-end close, supporting financial reporting, and driving greater operational rigor across the finance function.

As the Controller, you will take ownership of accounting procedures and financials, working closely with finance and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure the business has reliable reporting and scalable processes. This role offers the opportunity to help build the accounting function from the ground up, contribute to work that has visibility at the leadership level, and navigate the complexity of supporting an international organization across multiple jurisdictions.

Your impact💥

  • Oversee financial management and reporting, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with local and international standards.

  • Run and continuously improve the month-end accounting close process to drive efficiency and accuracy.

  • Ensure all government payments and lodgements are current, including Business Activity Statements (BAS), PAYG Withholding, and state taxes.

  • Manage financial policies and approval standards to maintain proper controls over budgets and expenditures across the organization.

  • Create and maintain robust internal controls and procedures to protect the integrity of financial data and compliance.

  • Drive the annual tax submission process for both Australian and US entities, including federal/state filings and R&D tax credit optimization.

  • Lead continuous process improvements, leveraging financial systems and tools to enhance efficiency, data accuracy, and team capacity.

  • Oversee internal and external audit processes, ensuring transparency, compliance adherence, and stakeholder confidence.

What We’re Looking For 🧠

  • CA/CPA qualified with a minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience building or enhancing an accounting function from the ground up.

  • Demonstrated financial acumen with a proven track record of coordinating and driving financial reporting and accounting operations.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based accounting platforms (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar) and demonstrated ability to resolve high-level technical accounting issues.

  • Strong analytical and strategic planning skills with practical knowledge of Excel, data processing, and BI tools.

  • Demonstrated experience in cash flow management, banking/treasury finance, and hedging strategies (advantageous).

  • Ability to build scalable processes, drive operational improvements, and bring structure to an evolving finance function.

  • Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills with the judgment to navigate operational complexity.
