About this role

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join our Data team in Sydney.

Data powers some of the most important decisions at Stake. From understanding customer behaviour and measuring product impact to improving operational efficiency and uncovering new opportunities, our data platform helps teams move with confidence.

As a Data Engineer, you’ll build the foundations that help Stake scale. You’ll create trusted, accessible and high-quality data systems that empower teams across the business to make better decisions, faster.

Working closely with engineers, product managers, analysts and stakeholders, you’ll solve complex problems, improve critical systems and create leverage for others. You’ll play a key role in shaping the future of our data platform while contributing to products and experiences used by hundreds of thousands of customers.

We work in a hybrid model, spending three days a week in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.

What success looks like

Within your first year, you’ll have:

  • Built and evolved reliable, scalable data pipelines that become foundational to how Stake operates and makes decisions
  • Increased trust in data across the business by improving quality, observability, governance and documentation
  • Enabled product, operations and commercial teams to move faster through self-service data capabilities and thoughtfully designed datasets
  • Partnered closely with engineers and analysts to define and implement scalable data models that support critical business outcomes
  • Improved the performance, efficiency and maintainability of our data platform as customer and data volumes continue to grow
  • Helped establish best practices for data engineering, modelling, testing and platform reliability
  • Influenced how Stake measures success by creating robust datasets and metrics that inform strategic decision-making
  • Become a trusted technical partner across the business, known for solving complex problems with clarity, pragmatism and impact
You’ll thrive here if…
  • You have strong experience building and maintaining modern data platforms, pipelines and data products in production environments
  • You care deeply about data quality, reliability and creating systems other teams can depend on
  • You’re comfortable working across the data stack, from ingestion and transformation through to modelling and consumption
  • You combine strong technical judgement with a practical mindset, balancing long-term platform health with business needs
  • You communicate clearly, simplify complexity and enjoy partnering with people across technical and non-technical teams
  • You take ownership, move with urgency and enjoy solving problems that have meaningful customer and business impact
Technical skills
  • Experience with modern data technologies on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including BigQuery, Cloud Storage and Dataflow
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and data manipulation
  • Working knowledge of Python or another programming language
  • Experience with data warehousing and data modelling concepts
  • Understanding of data governance principles and best practices
  • Experience with reporting and visualisation tools, preferably Metabase
  • A desire to stay up to date with developments across GCP and emerging technologies, including AI
  • Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes is ideal, but not essential
Bonus if you’ve…
  • Worked in fintech, financial services or another highly regulated industry
  • Built data platforms supporting product analytics, experimentation or customer-facing products
  • Worked with modern cloud data platforms such as BigQuery
  • Contributed to data governance, lineage or observability initiatives at scale
  • Helped establish engineering standards, tooling or platform capabilities for growing teams
Benefits of working at Stake

At Stake, you’ll have the autonomy to make an impact while learning from some of the best people in the industry. You’ll play a meaningful role in building a company with strong momentum, ambitious goals and plenty of opportunities to grow.

Along the way, you’ll also enjoy a range of benefits through our Grow with Stake program, including:

  • Up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave
  • Childcare allowance

  • Annual leave swap days
  • Discretionary performance bonus
  • Stake products, including a 30% discount on an annual self-managed super fund (SMSF) membership, a $295 annual trading credit and a Stake Black account
